River low. Sunny with periods of cloud cover.
One dace and one grayling euro nymphing the run in Lady Alexanders Catch.
Walked upstream - channeling my inner mountain goat along the interesting bankside path.
Not much in the way of visible feeding fish but they rose to my dry flies often enough. 5 grayling and one wbt from the top of Abernant stream. One hooked and lost. Several missed opportunities (par for the course at the moment!). Quill Split wing CDC,
Parachute Blue wing olive, supa pupa s16 and s18 . Visited by kingfisher several times during the day.

Evening session in low, clear water. Fish were holding very close and responding well to small #18–20 nymphs, particularly Perdigons and Hotspot PTNs.

Took advice on whether to book on this beat and was told around Builth and above the temperature was 15-16c, although the river was obviously very low, I decided to give it a go. A very picturesque beat in a beautiful part of Wales. Wasn't difficult to suss where the fish were even for an inexperienced fly fisher like myself, tempting them in the bright conditions was the hard bit.

Euro nymphing got me some action in the faster runs, on beaded hares ear variations, nothing flashy. I did try with a fly line but my casting is at best inept. Wading was fairly easy although the edw pool was bouldery. Lovely path up there through the woods and sat for a while listening to the woodpecker. Should have spent the afternoon with some casting practice but instead had a lazy lunch watching the shoal of chub at the top of stone catch and admiring the view. No doubt the evening would have been productive, but left late afternoon as it was getting a bit too hot for me. Would love to go back in the spring.

We cancelled the trip due to the river conditions. We were very disappointed that a refund wasn't given. We believe that it was the responsible thing to do in the extreme conditions and should be encouraged by the fishery.

Fishing Passport Comment : The river at Abernant was undoubtedly low on 3rd Aug 2026, but still fishable.
