Me and a buddy of mine (James) had a brilliant evening on this Stretch yesterday evening, spent about 3 hours testing this beat as it was our first time fishing it! it was fantastic! lots of variation in different types of waters, we did some European style Nymphing, and some usual dry fly fishing, and had three lovely Trout straight away! we hoped for a good hatch as the sun was going down but, nothing much going on with top surface action! can't wait to go back for round two!

This visit to Abernant represented the triumph of optimism over common sense! A four hour drive from London brought me to this very well kept upper Wye beat. A few days before, I had decided to stop checking the river gauges and just trust my instinct, so I was disappointed to find the river a foot higher than I had expected and with more than a hint of colour. Nonetheless I covered the lower parts of the beat, Lady Alexander’s Catch and Stone Catch, thoroughly with fly on fast sinking line and spinner. The fly brought three trout, two of which of a decent size and beautifully marked. Unfortunately, the water on the upper parts of the beat, was too deep and powerful to safely wade, so left it for another day.

A welcome return to this gentle and productive beat. Weather slightly better then yesterday but did turn cold and windy at mid day when again had to finish early and seek shelter in the pub at Builth Wells. A size 12 dark green nymph took the fancy of two Trout - 8/10 inches. Water high but not too high and not too coloured. Cold down again wind spoilt the day.

Water high following heavy rain a couple of days earlier, although water running quite clear.

No fish this time, but a delightful beat and I will definitely return later in the season.

10 x grayling 6-16 inches, 1 x chub 4.25 pounds, 1 x out of season trout 12 inches. 2ft 6 inches plus was showing on the Llanstephan gauge with a tendency to rise. It was at least warm. No chance of wading, so trotting a slack from the bank had to be the method.

10 Grayling, 1 Chub
