A pleasant day's trotting on an attractive stretch of river. Largest grayling around a pound and a half, some of them hooked at epic distances. Thoroughly engaging fishing.

Fished from first light for about three hours. Spent the first two hours exploring, trotting various of the less accessible rocky parts of the upper and lower ends of the beat, without so much as a bite. I was considering an early retreat but decided to have a go in an ordinary looking gravel run in the middle field - this proved to be stuffed with fish and in the last hour I caught about a dozen Grayling to about 1 1/2 pounds, lost about the same amount (always happens with Grayling) as well as two Trout. I would have stayed longer but for a slow leak in my chest waders - not recommended in December!
I wouldn't attempt to fish this beat without waders, and the second lesson learned was to keep moving until you find the fish - once I located them it was pretty straightforward.

First time on this beat so targeted the most likely looking locations. 6 grayling in total to trotted maggot. Quite a slow day's fishing but the scenery made up for that. Saw two or three salmon moving upstream also.

A "challenging" day regarding weather. Extremely high winds limited casting. Water was in excellent condition; clear & pacey. Fish taken toward the bottom of the beat on heavy nymphs.

11 grayling, all 12"+. 2 wbt 9", great fighting fish. Cold, sunny river at a good level. First time at Abernant, nice stretch of water but not as interesting or challenging as Gromain.

Still and cloudy in the morning. Two grayling taken in the broken water below the Edw pool in a short flurry of activity around 11.30am. Everything went quiet after that so at about 2.30 I took a short break to boil the kettle. To my surprise I saw a few fish start to move as I made tea so I headed down the beat and took three more grayling and two out of season trout as the light faded. All the fish were in lovely condition; the best grayling about a pound and a half, the best of the trout around a pound. The grayling all took a pink shrimp pattern fished deep. I last fished this beat back at Easter when it was bitterly cold - it was a chilly enough December day today, but felt quite balmy in comparison!

I have been lucky with the weather on both my visits to Abernant with today being mild, overcast and windless.I started at the spot that produced the fish on my previous visit but only managed a couple of Grayling in the first hour. I then moved down to the shallow gravels and found lots of taking fish despite the shallow water.
I did not find any of the larger fish with the largest of the Grayling about 1lb 4ozs and had about 15 out of season trout. This beat seems to contain a very healthy stock of fish. Very enjoyable day. NB, this was all on trotted maggot, I tried some bread for a while to try and attract a chub but with no success.I also had a tiny Grayling attach itself at my feet while I was fiddling with my reel.

I can't get enough of the view downstream at Abernant, the fishing isn't bad either, although no chub were caught on this occasion. We long trotted maggots at varying depths, the river was carrying a little bit of extra water but running clear. The grayling were all in perfect condition, feeding well until the sun got off the water, when it was as if they just vanished. We saw this as our opportunity to call it a day and get on the road for a pint in the Seven Stars.

14 x grayling 10-16 inches, 7 x out of season trout to 15 inches, long trotting. Nice conditioned, strong grayling, mostly in the 14-15 inch class. River running cold and clear; Abernant is one of the few upper Wye beats I would wade far into with confidence while 2ft 3 inches showing on the Llanstephan gauge. Salmon showing intermittently on the beat, as they were yesterday on the Irfon.

For once the conditions were perfect for trotting with the river fining down and the weather overcast with no wind. I was not dissapointed as the Grayling were queing up from the first trot down. For a couple of hours in the morning I could do no wrong with a bite almost every cast. The Grayling shoal then moved away or stopped feeding and I picked up occasional Grayling and oos Trout, including one of 2lb 5oz. The Chub failed to show up but a great day nonetheless with 22 Grayling to 1lb 10ozs with most around the 1lb mark.
