Introduced a friend of mine to the slippery slope of fly fishing. Whilst the sun and lack of water made catching hard, it was an easy introduction to wading and casting. We did winkle out 7 wbt, mostly 5"-6" on a range of nymphs. And my mate landed the fish of the day on debut, a pristine 9" brownie.
We had a long lunch on the bank, sipped some river-chilled wine, chatted and gazed at the river, marvelled at the beautiful Wye Valley countryside and soon the lack of rising trout and shoaling grayling seemed not to matter.
My fishing has become quite frenetic over the years but today reminded me that it's so much more than the catch.
Retired to our B&B and evening meal content with one more fisher added to our fraternity.

Glorious day, although the Wye is showing the bones, and the all day has been bright, sunny, and warm. Fished from 10,30 till 5,30pm. 40+ graylings and 15+ brown trouts, and landed the beauty in the picture (what a fight!!) Fished with French nymphing in the morning, and dry fly (grey parachute has worked well) in the afternoon. Seen also an otter playing in the water, amazing! How can I ask for more???

Another wonderful day on the Wye. No water blazing hot sunshine. The river was in perfect condition to use a switch rod. Great practice. Fished for grayling in the afternoon. A big thanks to whoever rehung the bottom gate.

Incredible morning on the river today. Arrived at 08:00 and could see no rising fish so started by French nymphing and caught 6 trout, all around 6" so decided to try fishing the Duo and took a few fish on the dropper before the fish started favouring the dry fly so i switched to dry fly only (Size 16 Oppo) and the action really took off. Caught a couple of nice trout but they were mainly no bigger then 8", the grayling however were all sizeable fish, one around 14", which put up a strong fight. For every fish i hooked i missed at least 2 (too eager to strike). Unfortunately whilst pulling in a fish I waded into a large bolder and took a dunk (and lost the fish!) so had to call it a day at 13:00. Exceptionally pretty setting with no road noise or none fishers using the river.

Again, what a privilege to be able to fish such a piece of water. Thank you

I really thought that some of the shallow runs looked idea for dry fly but alas there was a cold wind from the East and nothing much hatching. I took a few small brown trout on dry fly but in the end switched to Euro-nymphing with immediately improved results. A lot of small brown trout, the biggest no more than 12" and a good number of moderate grayling, the best probably about a pound. I worked really hard for those fish and it was most rewarding to get the success I did on a pretty dull day. Majority of fish on a black and orange perdigon nymph,# 18, or a silver bead perdigon # 14, a few fish on olive dry fly. Very few fish came from the "Flats" and most were in the deeper and faster runs..
