Low water levels at the moment but did not affect the fishing with some quality grayling (about a pound) and one good fish at 1.5lb. Had to change the fly several times but majority caught on ptn and grhe in fast oxygenated water or shallower glides - not much of a rise although left the water before evening set in.

During a heatwave it was no surprise that the river was so low. Very little showing all day and those rises seen were mainly parr. We didn't persevere with the dry. Expecting the worse we were very happy to open the account with a reasonable grayling each in the 1.25lb to 1.5lb range and a feisty 1lb brown. Things became very difficult thereafter until we located an obliging shoal of middle sized grayling. A dozen fish to hand between us and many more on and offs., mostly fish about the 1lb mark - and very welcome they were too. All fish to nymphs, smaller than usual due to water conditions.

So, having discussed bullocks with the wonderful Alyson from WUF, I was booked on to Abernant for the rest of the day. I got down to the water at about 11.30am and was into my first trout very soon afterwards. It was a terrific afternoon netting a total of 14 trout and 5 grayling before I had to head home just before 6pm. Most of the trout were quite small in the 6-8 inch bracket, but the best was just under a pound and a really lovely fish. With only a few fish showing on the surface, I fished nymphs and spiders. At one point I had two cracking grayling on the same cast which always makes for something of a problem when landing them. Thankfully, they both went back safely even if they did take a while to revive. The best grayling of the afternoon was around a pound and a half. This is a terrific beat. Thanks again to Alyson for sorting it for me.

Not the best plan of the season so far, to go and fish Abernant when the Llanstephan guage is at 3" (have never fished here when it is quite this low before, nor likely too again I suspect!) when it is also windy and when rain is forecast mid-afternoon. With hardly any fly at all and no rises, except for tiny trout, the session proved a tad challenging(!) and sense finally prevailed at 3p.m. when I decided to head home. However, having fished duo with a HE emerger and FBPTN, I did manage to catch five grayling and eight trout. All of the trout and two of the grayling were on the nymph and three grayling on the emerger. Two of these risen fish, after taking the fly, then induced the other grayling to take the nymph, not once but twice - not unusual of course but always entertaining when it happens. The other grayling was taken later whilst Czech nymphing hard on the bottom, again on a FBPTN. Best trout 10" and the rest even smaller. Grayling mainly 10" plus two of 11 and 12". Very hard, but at least something to show for such an ill-timed session - must try to get the brain more in gear when planning my next visit to the river!

There is some lovely trout fly water on this beat with it at this low level. There was a fantastic hatch yesterday afternoon - was a fairly soft day with some cloud cover - with olives, yellow mays sedges and mayflies amongst the feast on offer to the fish. They didnt seem too impressed however and never settled in to predictable taking patterns - the few we winkled out were with one exception oncers. Silver tourists present too - several flaunting themselves including at least one lunker - above Edw confluence. Its a funny year so far, only 14 fish total out of 10 rod days - its almost as if someone has been training the fish over winter!

Quite chilly when I arrived 12C . Left the sunshine behind in Cwmbran. Fished a team of spiders with a ptn on point, no luck. Put a gold beaded hares ear on point and caught 4 trout in the same run, 2 around 12 inches and two tiddlers.
By midday sun was blazing. Learnt to access the top half of the beat by wading across and not abseiling down the left bank!
Desultory hatch, no fish seen rising so left 2pm.

Surprisingly few flies emerging during the day - a few Danica, Yellow Mays and Medium Olives. Perhaps it was the north wind that put them down? At times it was quite strong!
Klink & Dink method was adopted with Dink (wtd PTN) catching most fish. Also a traditional team of wet flies worked well in late afternoon. Apart from the eleven trout/grayling a multitude of parr (trout and salmon) were caught.
