Second day on the stretch after a successful day on Thursday. Same tackle, same bait, same swims, same weather but only one small chub all day. I guess that sums up river fishing! Will I return? Of coarse I will.
I would suggest a rope and spiral dog tether for those more mature anglers as access to some of the swims can get very slippy if wet and the steps are eroded.

Second day of our annual pilgrimage to the Wye. Arrived around 9am and got the 'Taxi' down to the beat. Well worth it. It was a pretty hot cloudless day. Walked the beat and we both fished swims opposite the NT gardens. Another case of nothing doing until the evening. My mate caught a few nice chub. Really memorable day with my first close encounter with a Wye Salmon of around 15lb that shot out like a torpedo to attack my pellet as I was reeling in—sadly all but too briefly on the line. This was followed by a pristine Chub at 4lb 4oz then another surprise—a Pike at 6 1/2lb. Then a specimen Perch took a lunge at my hook bait but didn't connect. Finally a stunning Barbel just shy of a double at 9lb 12oz, just as the light was fading and the farmer had arrived to drop us back. Not the best in terms of numbers but a very enjoyable day. Will definitely return to this beat. Maybe on a weekday when there are less canoeists about (though most were couteous) and not so many screaming kids in the picnic area.

Lovely day on/in the river, mostly trotting hemp and maggot. We caught many dace and some small chub. River was low and tea coloured. My buddy was snapped off while ledgering at the end of the session by something somewhat larger!
Very nice beat but would advise to travel light. Also, watch out for your sandwiches as the farmers dog had mine!

A lovely day on the river but hard. Lost one fish in the weeds. Thankfully it was not tethered as I got the hook back on the mainline (the lead dropped off thanks to the release system). I suspect it was a chub based on the initial bite.
Conditions were sunny mostly, but a significant drop in air temp/humidity from the previous day - I could probably make an excuse out of that but I wont. :-)

Arrived late morning to find the river in good condition. Tried a few spots including the weir pool area but no fish showing until late afternoon when 1 barbel 7-8lb and 4 chub up to 5lb came in the space of about an hour. The weather was unseasonably hot with bright sunshine for most of the day, which I suspect explains the slow nature of the fishing. Great to be on the river though in beautiful surroundings.

1st time on this beat and it's absolutely stunning. River was a good level and nicely coloured but was only able to pick off the odd fish from roaming around.
Used the taxi service, which I would definitely recommend and fished in front of the weir garden where most of the swims are concentrated. Would have no problem recommending this beat.

Great beat. Struggled to find the barbell with the water rising very quickly. Will be back.

A frustrating session on one of our favourite beats which ended much better than it started!! We took the long walk to the river after a leisurely morning at yat rock watching the peregrines. Setting up in our usual area we found the fish but lost more fish off and also more gear than the fish we landed.
We stuck in the area as we knew there were fish there but after losing a lot of end tackle and fish to weed beds and rocks the swim went dead.
We put out some more bait and after one chub of around 5lb on freelined meat the swim was still dead. One of us moved and had 3 fish in 10mins.
After a frustrating start we ended with some nice barbel, the biggest going 8lb at least. Beautiful setting and the walk back was much easier due to all the leads lost!!!

River was up and coloured, with considerable flow - perfect for Barbel. 8 Barbel in all; 1 x 7lbs, 5 x 8lbs, 2 x 9lbs with largest fish 9lbs 4ozs, all on standard feeder tactics. Most fish caught on the uppermost swim of the beat, (much to the entertainment of the visitors to the botanical gardens) but some also found opposite the boathouse. Wonderful fishery unsurpassed in terms of sheer beauty, quantity and quality of fish. Thank you for a great birthday, fishing the Wye.
