Having done well on this stretch in the past at this time of year I decided to spend my last river strip of the season here. Bank access is decent, although there is a barbed wire fence running along the river (with stiles for access to swims). Fairly peaceful with little in the way of road noise.
I fished the feeder with pellet and crushed boilie and matching paste wrapped hook baits. I fished 3 swims up to halfway along the stretch, with my first and last fish of the day coming from the tree stump swim. I had 5 Chub including 3 threes and a four pounder and a nice 8lb Barbel.

Second day with lurefishing for pike. Unfortunately without luck, fished from eleven to half past four. Tried many tactics but fish weren't hungry.

Fished on the beat two days with lures, tried to catch pike. First day I caught a 4 pounder, and lost a bigger fish. I had one more bite at the rest of the day. Fished on the Upper and Lower Canon Bridge beats, but all the action happened on the upper part of the river.

We were a group of six having booked both the upper and lower stretch. The river had a reasonable amount of colour following rain so conditions looked good. It is apparent that this stretch is not fished very much and me and my friend spent a while finding suitable swims and clearing them. We decided upon six possible swims. Between two of us we had a barbel each, 6lb 10oz and 7lb 5oz. One to pellet and one to maggot, both on feeder. Maggot tactics also produced a 3lb chub and numerous small chub and dace. Maggot is fun as you don't quite know what fish is coming next. We also lost two large fish, probably barbel. It is true that the banks are high and but nothing insurmountable. As a previous reviewer suggested a rope and spike for the less agile would be a handy accessory but we didn't need this on the day.

I was very excited to be fishing here but was disappointed to find poor access to the river and a lack of swims. Only found 1 swim to fish from and this had a large tree branch submerged where we need to net fish. Another problem I found was the lack of flow to the river, it was completely still and a 1oz lead held easy maybe even a few SSG shot. I believe you need some pace to the water to catch barbel it certainly helps. I had no bites most of the day and contemplated packing up but to my surprise I managed to hook into a barbel late afternoon giving me my biggest fish of the trip at 9lb, so silver linings! This was the only fish of the day. I used normal barbel tactics, pellet and feeder/pva etc. Had lots of success this week on the Wye using this method but not here. This is the only beat on the Wye that I've not been impressed by and won't be back I'm afraid.

This was my first experience of the Wye and this type of fishing. I liked the prospect of being on the river for lots of reasons, especially the flora and fauna. Talking to another experienced angler at the campsite he was finding conditions difficult for barbel holding bottom with the river high and coloured after heavy rain. I had a good walk exploring various swims and caught my first chub, just over 4lbs which made my day! Luncheon meat did the trick.
