River was 0.31m on the Ross gauge, giving good wading access to all the pools on the beat. A few canoes in the morning, but not excessive traffic and all were polite. 1 salmon seen splashing in the tail of Vanstone, around 10lb. No fish caught.

Water low 0.25m, hot bright day, tricky. I had contacted ghillie to agreed my 10 year old daughter could share fishing in the morning. Arrived and others fishing Vanstone, so we started at Maddox. Perfect, safe decent water, lobbing a SHFC from the large boulders, ideal for a youngster to easily cover water offering real possibility. Another rod arrived and started in the Vanstone and immediately caught one. My daughter fished through, again excellent easy water to spin and had one jump which sent her ecstatic with excitement wanting to come back for the evening. I fished the upper pools during the afternoon before my daughter returned with her spinning rod. Again fish showed in deep water of Vanstone but would not commit. Wonderful to be able to watch daughter fishing, covering and her seeing wild Salmon in 2022.

Had a lovely day on the river, however conditions were very hot and bright which didn’t help. All pools fished well with the fly and clarity was good. Saw resident fish in Vanstone and Island pools and a running fish in The V.
Considering it was such lovely weather we weren’t bothered by huge amounts of Kayaks.

Although no salmon were caught, a great day of casting tuition and guiding from Oliver Burch. I think the Ross gauge was at 0.55 and the water had about three feet of visibility so on the low end of medium height. The Vanstone didn’t reveal its treasures but there were fish present in the pool above, the corner tree.

After two salmon caught this week hopes were high but I didn’t trouble the scorers other than one large chub which had me thinking salmon for a few seconds. Hopefully the other rods faired better in the evening. Water clear still at the moment.
