Five smalll trout caught and released all 4-10 inches during fishing from 10.30 to 5pm. Two taken on a pheasant tail nymph and 3 on a small dark caddis. Water very, very low and clear but with some dense algal mats covering the bottom (and any nymph presented) in some places. Fished all day and only saw 4 or 5 rises, with very few insects coming off the water. Took a walk along the Wye at Builth one evening and only saw one rise in an hour too. Sad times for our rivers.

Slow for much of the day but at certain points the river came alive. Prolific caddis hatch at 6ish and the river turned into a jacuzzi - fish a cast for a good while. Beautiful beat.

Only mildly let down by out of date info/instructions. Be aware this beat is also part of a club water with day tickets so you may well be sharing the beat. Also you can get a week's fishing via the club (Llandrindod) at the caravan park for just £15 vs the W&U price of £17.50.

Fishing Passport Note : There is an agreement in place between the owner and club in 2022.

A first time out evening ticket reccie on this beat for me and much much more walking than fishing . River was up a tad on the gauge and quite coloured (which I gather it has a reputation for when it rains ) but it was interesting that it hadn't actually risen that much considering the deluges a while beforehand .

A very interesting looking beat indeed it seemed to me and a wonderful place to be fishing, especially once you get above the double bank stretch where the vista really opens out . Access at first is a bit tight for a short while but its meat and veg' if ones used to the wild streams and the fishing the first field up from the chalet site is a bit of a bear for access to the river which is a pity, some great looking glides for any winter trotting but most definitely worth crossing over to the left bank on the double bank section as you go up. A huge cliff on the right bank! Some really great looking runs through there . Once above there and back on the right bank it opens up beautifully for a good while and a properly peaceful place to be.

Was some fly hatching and the odd fish rising here and there even in all the coloured water but out of reach today, not a place to be wading when its coloured water methinks! Looks to be hard enough when there is any visibility! Had just the one off the top that I could actually get to though so happy with that , not big but beautiful colours and a proper tubby fish . Great.

A smorgasboard of caddis species and numbers on the stones and rocks. A pair of Peregrines where up high tearing up the sky and thats more than enough to make my day. Be back soon and hope to maybe slog up to the top third of it here !

Note to WUF ; the description states some fishing below the Disserth bridge but its not actually shown on the map issued. Please could you clarify and also whats the story up on the Llanyre stretch.? Thanks in advance.

I had intended to fish another wild stream on the 2nd day of my 3 day trip, but had left it too late to book by leaving it to the morning (NB – you can’t book wild streams after c. 7pm the evening before). Fortunately the Ithon was there to step in and offer a reasonable plan B. I’ve fished this stretch before, but never got very far upstream due to time constraints – so this time, I skipped the first 1/2mile or so and jumped in further up. This proved to be a good move, the river changes character as it moves upstream, shallowing out, speeding up, narrowing up a little and becoming easier to navigate. I spent most of the morning and afternoon fishing either a couple of nymphs on a Euronymphing setup, or the Duo. There wasn’t much rising, but the dry consistently brought up fish, and the nymphs took their fair share too. Lots of hungry salmon parr around again, mainly targeting the dry. The fishing was best where the faster riffles/pocket water offered some cover from the low water and high sun, or where the weed sheltered countless fish in hidden troughs and little runs. I switched to a couple of small dry patterns for the evening. Again, there wasn’t an awful lot of rising going on, but a #14 jingler and a #16 emerger were very successful in the last couple hours of the day. Another great day on the wild rivers of Wales.

NB – access in the lower stretches is quite tricky. The banks are steep and dense with bushes and trees, and there aren’t too many options for navigating around on the banks. The only option in quite a few places is to progress up the river, which can be hard going and slippy. Im a fairly spritely, young-ish chap and it was frustrating even for me. I would imagine someone with a bit less mobility might find it tricky.

The river was still up and carrying a bit of colour. The day started bright and still but ended up wet and windy. Around noon the sun went in and the river came alive with fly and rising fish. We caught plenty of fish on nymphs and dries. The biggest trout was around 1 3/4lb. Fly life - midge, olives, black gnats, march browns, sulphur duns and sedge.
