Fishing:Salmon

No. of Anglers:2

Al Ward landed an 8lb Cock fish from the head of little Glaswyn on a orange & red CK fly - his first Welsh fish. The fish was quickly measured and released strong.

Paul Richardson lost an acrobatic hen fish in the tail of the next pool. Perhaps a future Spawning pair? No redds visible yet, other fish seen at the top of the beat.

Charlie the Riverkeeper was delighted as this is the 1st Salmon caught here in 5 years.

Cold start to the day ( 2 degrees) but cloudy and not a breath of wind which is perfect by me. River low and clear but no fly life and I never saw a rise all day. Caught fish from most spots except the long glide on the open field which is normally quite good. Pestered by the oos trout later in the day ( even had two on a once ! ) but one was 18" so I didn't mind that one! .Fished nymphs all day, the biggest grayling was 15" but half of them were quite small.

Irfon river levels where dropping so desired to spend the afternoon at the Cefnllysgwynne beat. River was still a little high and murky when I arrived so headed to the top of the beat. Nothing showing on the surface so nymphed my way through and no luck. Sat back and watched the water for a a bit a noted a fish rising on the far back under the trees. Tempted a 12 inch Grayling to a size 14 F Fly and was off the mark. Worked my way down towards the bottom of the beat and had a further Grayling and 2 OOS brownies. Lovely afternoon

A lovely day to be on the water, although bright sun and light wind might not have been the best fishing conditions.
Very few fish rising, despite willow flies and a few small Olives being on the wing.
As always a lovely place to fish, with plenty fo water to go at, It'll be interesting to see how the winter goes.

Very hard work finding the fish today, but a lovely day.

BTW the wading is quite deceptive: it suddenly and often unexpectedly gets very slippy. We would both regard ourselves as good waders but both fell in, even with wading staffs. Although in retrospect this was probably quite feeble, would recommend staffs and probably also felt soles with studs (which we stupidly left at home !!).

This was the day of the sudden 10 degree temperature drop and a bit of a shock. The forecast mentioned sunshine and showers but in the Irfon valley this turned out to mean single figure air temperatures with a burst of heavy rain or even hail about every 15 minutes. The river crept up inch by inch. Not the best of days to choose to go dry fly fishing, but for some reason we did. It turned out to be very hard work. 5 grayling 8-14 inches and 2 trout 10-15 inches, F-Fly, Green Insect and Red Tag. Otherwise lots of grayling parr which seem to be in all our rivers at the moment. The better trout was a handsome fellow found just off the current dining on hatching willow flies.

Tough fishing but very enjoyable day. We stuck to dries and NZ method, suspect we would have had more if we'd gone deep.
