River looking nice but freezing fog persisted all day. Tough to locate fish but a few decent grayling caught trotting with maggots. One grayling just over 2lb and a huge OOS Brownie at around 5lb.

Didn’t see any fish. The water was Gin clear, and about .55 on the gauge. Fished all the deeper water from the Church up to the Grandstand (very difficult to access, some dead trees need removing). Temperature was 1 degree all day as the fog didn’t clear. Fly fished with a team of 3 Grayling flies. Would be interested to hear from OB of Gloucestershire where he located the shoal?

15 x grayling 6 -17.5 inches mainly trotting, but also Tenkara and bugging. A foggy if warmish day in which we never saw the sun in this valley. The water was very clear and at about .59 on the Cilmery gauge. However, it was well into the afternoon before we located a decent shoal which included some very handsome large grayling. This was all very satisfying as darkness fell but there followed a somewhat tragic end to the day as the Landrover suffered an apparently catastrophic transmission failure. Arrived home by RAC relay to find a jury service summons on the door mat. What else can I expect to happen?

Left South Wales in a sunny 8 degrees C and arrived at the beat in thick freezing fog at minus 5. Couldn't see the river outline from the parking spot due to the fog at the Church end so wasn't too hopeful. Tackled up more in desperation than hope but was pleased that I found the river! After an hour or so when some small Ladies had given themselves up to me, I got out of the river to untangle my line. I then realised how cold the air temperature actually was as I could see ice crystals forming on my waders. Despite greasing my rod eyes they too were frozen. Apparently I have 8 fingers and 2 thumbs but I couldn't feel any of them so with thickening fog and dropping temperatures I decided to head back to the car and called it a day.
Flies that worked were UV flash caddis.

Was it the gale, the rising waters, or my ineptitude? I guess I'll never know.

One decent Brown Trout, who had forgotten it was out of season, safely returned but no Grayling. River had dropped and cleared quickly after previous night's rain. Good looking beat with plenty more to explore another time. Bedrock wading challenging but some lovely gravelly stretches.

River was slightly on the rise with colour. An enjoyable day and nice of the beat owner to come and say hello, but unfortunately a NIL return. I'll be back though.

Just one Grayling again today, caught on the third cast then nothing for the rest of the day. Hooked on a tungsten beaded pink shrimp, a very strong cock of 14". No more fish came out of the pool despite several changes of fly and I couldn't locate another shoal. Fished the top end of the beat for the first time which has a good variety of water. River running clear and at a good height (0.53m on the Cilmery gauge).

1 Grayling
