Dare I say,"too much rain"? Water quite high and no fishing attempted. Did notice large numbers of canoeist searching for "safe" water as Wye was out of the question....None actualy in the water though.

2 trout (both 3/4lb) and 1 grayling of the same weight(returned) all on the same fly - a Greenwells Glory fished dry. There was a brief hatch of medium olives, and a few fish rising, in a mixture of strong sun and blustery showers. Really enjoyed the day and this stretch of the river.

A mild (for January) showery day on this very attractive beat. I was a bit nervous about the rain having been on a rising Irfon before, but I think the Cilmery gauge stayed around 5.3 all day. Managed eight Grayling all when Czech nymphing - 3 tiny, 3 average and 2 large, the best of which measured 16" - when I hooked it I was dreaming of much more such was the fight! All came to guess what?... Pink Shrimp... on middle dropper, until I lost the last of my regular bottom droppers on a snag and tied on a Tungsten Orange Bug which promptly attracted the last two fish - what does that prove? I honestly don't know....

What a beautiful beat! Arrived early to get a full days fishing in and we were not dissappointed. 9 Good sized graying to 15" and 3 hard fighting brownies. We had to work hard for them in the ice cold water, but it was worth it. All fish taken on heavy beaded bugs bounced across the bottom. We also got a fleeting visit from an otter!!! Thank you for a great day.

Took a gamble on the river falling enough to make it worth the trip - it was still carrying a fair bit of colour (enough to make wading some of the stretches a wee bit exciting). Managed 3 grayling up to 1lb, and a small brownie. Binned it early when the hail began. No hatch, but nice long glides that I bet fish well when conditions more conducive.

After only our third frost of the autumn it was a cold start and, at 6 degrees, the water was 3 deg lower than last Friday further upstream....so I was glad to have packed the hot Bovril! Just a few stonefly and no olives all day. No rises but still rose four fish to a HE emerger whilst fishing duo: nailed two but bumped the others off. Had three other ladies on pink nymphs and bugs fishing duo or Czech nymphing: two 12" and 14" fish and the best a lovely fat 2 pounder of 18". Two trout and a few graylets and that was it. The first time I have fished here - a lovely spot for sure although shallowish runs seem to predominate. Even though it is a relatively short beat, I still didn't have time to do justice to all of the more likely fish holding spots during what are now becoming rather short dark days!

What a fantastic day!!
My first time on the Irfon and it's a stunning stretch of river. The day was made even better when I managed to hook and land my first grayling after several unsuccessful trips in search of this beautiful, hard fighting fish. This fish was about a pound and a half in weight and was the first of three. The other two were around the half pound to a pound mark. A small wbt of about 10" was also landed and a much larger fish lost as it somersaulted through the air. All fish were taken on Czech nymphs.
A fantastic experience made even better as the wife also landed her first grayling.
Many many thanks to Seth who's advice proved to be invaluable.
