The first time I have had a 'duck' on this beat. Water good - no activity. Otter prints!!!! Good ranunculus. Much better access on upper section - thanks W&U! BUT: bluebells, wild garlic etc. and dozens of sand martins also steak sandwich and pint of cider at the Riverside.................who needs fish?

Conditions : Mainly sunny but with a cool breeze.
River: Plenty of water in the river but fairy clear. Usual crossing spots difficult to wade across.
Fly: No visible fly hatches on the water.
Fishing: Difficult due to the flow of water and limited access points.
Fish: No rising fish or signs of moving fish.
Catch: Only one small grayling, caught on a gold head hare's ear nymph.
Other comments: Access across stiles very difficult and hazardous due to positions of barbed wire, lack of intermediate steps and poorly maintained, rickety woodwork. We could only conclude that the stiles were almost designed to prevent access to the fishing fields and wouldn't comply with any H&S checks. (comment by H&S professional). DW

River high and pushing through very fast which made wading almost impossible. Will try again once the river level drops.

River was high and pushing through fast. Still some visibility, but most of the river was inaccessible- even with chest waders - not safe to wade upstream as normal.
Did manage 2 trout on the euro rod whilst searching for grayling.

This stretch is great if you can wade. Those without waders or in conditions like today perhaps choose somewhere else. Bank access is poor and badly maintained

River up and ripping through due to last nights rain. Not muddy though, more green?
Trotted red maggot, lost 3 small ones, don’t know what they were. Netted 2 OOS Brownies, one around 14”, great scrap in fast water.
As is usually the case on these small rivers a Chainsaw, Lopper and grappling hook would have been useful. Why all the barbed most of the way up the stretch. If it’s only to stop livestock falling in USE NORMAL WIRE SO FISHERMEN CAN HOP OVER SAFELY! Rant over.

A wonderful day on one of my favourite W&UF beats. Biggest grayling was 14" ... all caught on trotted maggots.
Many thanks to the landowner and the W&UF.

First time to this beat. A very enjoyable day trotting maggots. River quite high and pushing through.
Small fish, except a bonus OOS brown of just over a pound. My first Grayling, which i am delighted about.
Challenging fishing in some parts due to trees having fallen in, but plenty of swims generally to have a go at.
Thank you again WUF
