A last blast for the trout before the season ends on the very upper Usk and the river was looking as stunning as always and the water a good height and crystal clear . No fly or surface activity today at all , was hoping the the willow/needle flies might be up but not today . A dry terrestrial pattern flopped tight to the banks and eddies went unoticed but was great fun anyhows with the anticipation of a good splosh from a fish always present
A cool quite gusty wind and quite a fair number of leaves in all the food lanes maybe didnt help today ?
Last light saw a few fish dimpling (on midge?? A few in the air ) in the first long glide down from the bridge (which is usually can be productive run I find) but the fish where very shy tonight . Move on.
Some more obliging fish moving just below the bridge , an truly amazing spot to fish with the view of the waterfall framed by the considerable arch of the bridge and it was under the bridge itself that a very large fish indeed came out to play then, sploshing around a bit. Alas by the time I had fumbled around like a fool all gibberish like in the now rapidly disappearing light (the bats where out now) beefing up the tippet and larger fly he had gone to bed it seems ! Damn , would have been a very fine way to wrap up the short season we've had this year!!
Whatever, very happy to have had the two there today all things considered (on size 19 para adams) so bid it goodbye till next year . Am sure we all hope for a much longer one next year!
Now for the grayling.....

A very scenic beat with dramatic falls and glides, no fish to be seen or had by all 3 anglers, however in these surroundings it was easy to accept.
Access was good although a combination lock would be good for the gates instead of climbing over.

A very autumnal day on a beautiful beat. Flies coming off all day but no sign of fish rising or responding to a dry fly.
There was an awkward downstream gusty breeze but, that apart, there was no excuse for catching nothing.
Most of the beat is really nice but the bottom 150 yards is difficult wading with a lot of overhanging trees and problems exiting the water.

Tough beat for beginner lots of over hanging trees along the whole length. Hooked what looked like a brown trout but unhooked before i could get it in the net. Beautiful spot will definitely go back after i improve my knowledge and casting.

The Usk looked absolutely stunning today. Weather bright if somewhat autumnal; very healthy flow and water temperature, unsurprisingly given recent rain. Fishing not easy but one super 15" fish kept me very happy - rest smaller, lost a few.

Good level of water coming through and not too much colour. 4 small trout from the lower section on caddis nymphs and spiders. One from the Crai section on a large sedge.

mid afternoon in high summer is not ideal for fishing but this shady beat is lovely.

River was quite low and clear. Saw a one or two fish but neither of us had a bite fishing from 12pm until 5pm. Lovely spot though with lots of wag tails, dippers and kindfishers. Was also quite challenging fishing with many overhanging trees etc.

First fishing trip into Wales for me this year - and what a fantastic day! Fished 8.30-3.30 and best of the action was early on. Water height seemed good after rain earlier in the week; most fish 8-12" but 3 noticeably better at 15", 16" and 19", all on nymphs. Largest had some significant jaw damage (was no longer able to close properly - encounter with a spinner perhaps?) but it seemed like an old injury and it was in very good condition in spite of this. Would be easy to identify in event of recapture. All fought hard and went back full of energy. Lost a few too. Absolute pleasure to be out, thank you to all at WUF.

Clear, bright and cold day (6C when I arrived at 11am), feeling much more pleasant on the sun by early afternoon. Water was very clear. A reasonable olive hatch started from about 1pm but no trout rising at any point in the river. One decent trout of 17" taken and killed directly above the falls on a heavily weighted cased caddis pattern.
Beautiful beat with plenty of variety.
