mid afternoon in high summer is not ideal for fishing but this shady beat is lovely.

River was quite low and clear. Saw a one or two fish but neither of us had a bite fishing from 12pm until 5pm. Lovely spot though with lots of wag tails, dippers and kindfishers. Was also quite challenging fishing with many overhanging trees etc.

First fishing trip into Wales for me this year - and what a fantastic day! Fished 8.30-3.30 and best of the action was early on. Water height seemed good after rain earlier in the week; most fish 8-12" but 3 noticeably better at 15", 16" and 19", all on nymphs. Largest had some significant jaw damage (was no longer able to close properly - encounter with a spinner perhaps?) but it seemed like an old injury and it was in very good condition in spite of this. Would be easy to identify in event of recapture. All fought hard and went back full of energy. Lost a few too. Absolute pleasure to be out, thank you to all at WUF.

Clear, bright and cold day (6C when I arrived at 11am), feeling much more pleasant on the sun by early afternoon. Water was very clear. A reasonable olive hatch started from about 1pm but no trout rising at any point in the river. One decent trout of 17" taken and killed directly above the falls on a heavily weighted cased caddis pattern.
Beautiful beat with plenty of variety.

First time on this fine water, very little idea of whether I was barking up the wrong trees, but gave it my best shot for lies that looked likely. 1'6" on Brecon gauge and water Gin clear.
No salmon seen or caught but a really pleasant time in a truly beautiful setting - quite a bit of variety, amazing to see the Usk squeezed through a channel just 4 or five feet across at one point!
Some pool notes and tips would be really helpful for this beat, which water heights are best, salmon lies etc.

10ft wt 7 fly only. Fished from the Usk/Crai junction to half way to the lower Limit. No fish caught or seen. Spinning anglers on the left hand bank just upstream of the waterfall. A truly beautiful river easily fished with a 10ft rod even under the tree canopy. Waded all the way other than under the bridge. Very clear water but lots of leaves in it.
My only concern is that access to the water has to be made over locked gates carrying new signs ‘Private Property please stay out’ and over electrified and barbed wired fences and past river signs placed at frequent intervals saying ‘ No fishing, no bathing, no picnicking, no canoeing’. I got the impression my access was not welcome. Could put the more timid off.

We were due to fish Penpont which was unfishable due to all the rain this week. Thanks to that W & U office for putting us unto this beat which is a few miles upstream of Penpont. It’s was just about fishable on the Usk but all fish were caught on the Crai tributary which is included on the beat. The Crai had much less colour in it. All fish were caught on the French leader from the margins as you’d expect with the rivers in flood.

Very clear water, very few rising fish and none seen despite the aquarium like conditions. Lost one decent trout as the light faded.
