Landed one nice fish and lost another with a few smaller fish landed or dropped. Good fly life but very little sign of fish activity.

Cold downstream wind and little hatching until about 3pm, mostly LDOs but some gnats and medium olives. The water was also exceptionally clear. One beautiful 16 1/2 inch wild brown trout on a coch y bonndu fished NZ dropper style in the rougher water of a pool half way downstream from the bridge, but all rising fish in the slower stretches stayed down when covered. Reasonable given the clarity of the water and the fact that the beat was well fished Saturday and Sunday, so no complaints and a wonderful beat that I will return to.

Cracking bit of water here, all a fisherman could ask for with deep fast channels, glides, riffles, the works..
The cold northerly wind this weekend seemed to put the fish down mostly with very few fish rising even though there were olives and march browns hatching sporadically through the day. Had a nice fish of around 1 3/4lb on a nymph in one of the deep channels and a couple of smaller fish on dries near the upper limit of the beat, sadly bumped off another nicer fish at the waterfall pool by the bridge.
I’m sure this beat could produce some large specimens on its day, lovely place to be and nice personal fishing on a narrower section of the Usk.

Very little hatching after a cold night, the one and only rise I saw all day I covered and hooked a 14" fish on a size 16 para Adams. Two more trout, 16",14" fell to a size 16 2.5mm black tung bead nymph fished upstream with a wool indicator. A group of eight kayakers were looking to put in at the bridge but I challenged them and explained the situation. It seemed strange that an older, well equipped group who had traveled from Suffolk had no idea about where they can paddle, when I raised the issue about the British Canoe Union they all distanced themselves from them and claimed complete ignorance.

Hard day. No real hatch and no luck with nymph either. Rose two fish and missed both. Beautiful place and should be great in a few weeks.

A tough day due to the bright sunshine which really has an affect against the bedrock. A few large trout seen but none to the net. The closest came under dark tree root where a nice sized trout was hooked and lost. I get the feeling in overcast conditions the fishing here could come alive but sadly today was not that day!
