Inspired by some decent catch returns/reviews 3 years ago my pal & I booked to spend a full day on this beat. The conditions were good... warm, overcast, and light wind. With some decent rainfall a few days prior the water looked clean and bright. However, I would not recommend this section of the Cothi.

We navigated the Cothi upstream from the Dolucothi Arms Hotel, then the Twrch, upstream from the Junction Pool and finally the lower Cothi from the middle car parking point.

Throughout the day the biggest issue was access. Barbed, stock wire fencing erected directly on the edge of the rivers restricted bank fishing. At least 80% of the beats were inaccessible from the banks. Generally not a problem as we are avid wadders, however due to neglect, many fallen trees, branches and obstacles blocking the river (often in the ideal fish holding areas) slowed and often terminated our progress upstream. In many cases we were unable to leave the river due to the barbed wire fencing on both banks so we had no option but to retrace our footsteps. Then once on the banks trying to bypass the river obstacles gave us further problems getting back into the water as the banks were fenced and too high to safely access the river.

Generally we adore difficult, wild and neglected streams and rivers as they often prove fruitful. However these beats are currently un-fishable and need urgent attention (or a new and accurate description on the website). In addition to the access issues we found the beats sterile, lacking water volume, lacking invertebrates and life in general. We had travelled up from Hampshire & East Sussex for this sad experience and would not wish for others to be as disappointed as we were.

Second of two days. Headed downstream of Dolaucothi Arms. Slight rain and overcast. River had plenty of water and was cold and clear. Two very small trout caught and released on spider patterns.

2 very small trout both released. Caught on spider patterns. River full and clear. Not a lot of trout activity. Difficult fishing upstream of the Dolaucothi Arms nice pools and more open downstream.

Started below the bridge below the junction pool. I was approached by a gentleman (John Harris) who informed me we were on a private section (his) until we passed the next crop of trees about 500 yds downstream. The WUF map does not reflect this.
We moved on downstream to fish several nice pools but no activity. At the bottom stretch, we found access extremely difficult despite it being described as 'opening up'.

It was a good day for fishing being overcast and changeable and there were decent hatches of flies. Sadly there were no takers. I caught two parr and saw nothing else all day. I know it has been a bad year and that migratory fish are at an all time low due to the lack of water but I'd hoped there would be more brown trout showing but there seemed to be nothing happening, even in the most promising looking places.

Today’s part of the West Wales adventure wasn’t fruitful. No fly life and only a single knock on the nymph. The Cothi North of the junction pool is very much wild stream territory and although sheltered from the wind was hard-going, even with a 7ft rod. The main river was bleak and windswept today and after a further hour or so we retreated to the Dolaucothi Arms (very good).
