Day 3 of our annual pilgrimage. Scorching hot and sunny day so always up against it. But we persevered and winkled out a nice 7 1/2 pound barbel late on.
The bottom field was full of caravans and we were told that they had the fishing in that field during July/August - we were made to feel less than welcome. A shame as there are a couple of reasonable swims in that field.

An aweful day on the river.

Started in the faster water by the island but moved due to the number of canoeists beaching on the island opposite.

Moved upstream by the steps and again it was impossible to fish, the river looked like the M25 with canoes, it seemed most were on stag weekends judging by the noise and behaviour. We were even treated to some swimmers and paddle boarders thinking it was great fun to fall off in our swims.

Maybe just an unlucky day but very frustrating, the fishing never stood a chance. Both fish caught by the steps

4 barbel caught throughout the day with a nice small fish of around 2 1/2 to 3lb mark. Again the water colour was odd for the Wye, watery gravy. Which seemed to affect the chub numbers, well of larger chub. 20 small chublettes on corn caught, few inches in size.

Arrived at the beat around 5pm and made our way towards the bottom end. The river was at a normal summer level but very chocolate colour which seemed strange as we were told it hasn't rained much in the last week.

Fishing was very slow to start with but eventually we managed a couple of chub and a barbel.

We decided to move for the last couple of hours and found a few more fish before the swim went dead. In the past we have found that the last hour can be hectic or dead. Unfortunately this time it was dead but we were happy with our catch considering the catches other people are reporting so far this season.
