Despite the snow melt and river rising in the early hours in the morning the upper Taff fished really well for opening day. Started off on the bugs in the deep/fast runs and when there was a prolific hatch of march browns and ldo's (more March browns than ldo's) the fish were looking up (eventually). Managed a dozen or so fish with 5 fish being over 2lb and two maybe bigger. Hard to say as I do not take a weighing net with me.

Fished the river for the last time in the trout season yesterday. Started off on the lower river (Pontypridd) with very little success. Only managed 1 small trout and a couple of grayling. Moved up river to MTAA waters and managed over 2 dozen fish ranging between 1/2lb up to 2 1/2lb on dries and nymphs. Just love fishing the upper Taff at the back end of the season.

Eight trout on black klinkhammer size #18,color black.
It was beautiful river but a shame that I saw so much rubbish littered on the bank of the downstream beat near Merthyr Vale. I met two other fishermen who had been doing spinning from 4:00AM!

Fished the town water in Merthyr from Rhydycar up. Lots of Autumn dunns, BWO's and needle flies on the water with fish in a feeding frenzy. Fished quilled emergers and olive patterns and managed to catch 24 fish (all wild) ranging from 3/4lb up to 3.5lb. However, I did hook up into a really good fish which felt much bigger than 3.5lbs on quilled emerger but sadly snapped me off. Great days fishing!

The Welsh Rivers Team Trial was held on the Taff on the date above and twelve anglers participating caught 258 fish over 21cms with the largest being 53cms. They fished from the village of Abercanaid to Quakers yard. The river was up by a few inches on the day. Fish were caught mainly on Dry Flies and Gold head nymphs. Anyone who wishes to fish the area can contact Tony Rees on 01685 723520 for info.

I was fishing up stream with a single dry fly, fishing the pocket waters behind boulders and in fast runs. Despite the heavy rain showers and high winds I managed to catch half a dozen small trout before heading off home.

Myself and a friend fished the Upper Taf Fawr today. River was running very low and gin clear as you would expect with the lack of rain. Plenty of fly life, bwo's, ldo's and even the odd few brook dunns still. we managed to catch half a dozen fish each on single dry fly/Klinkhammers picking pocket water.

Fished from 9am on a nice stretch of the Taff. All very pleasant but no tugs, takes or bites of any description. Not one to give up, I decided to try the Taf Fawr. Unfortunately, (unless your a local) access to the river is difficult. Specifically, the road is high above the river, private land in between and the land around the river from dam road is private too. Therefore even though several miles were available, I fished only a little. Something of an unproductive day.

Very difficult to find a good spot/location. Did circle for several hours to find a parking place and spot to start fishing. GPS coordinates can do a better job. Did catch 2 trouts with nymph. Nothing on dry flies. Around 5pm it started to rain. Would recommend it only if better info/GPS co-ordinates are provided.

Managed a good couple of hours on the Taf Fawr today. Stream is very low and clear so fished a single dry fly/klinkhammer in the pocket water and fast/oxygenated runs and managed to catch 2 dozen small fish up to 3/4lb.
