No fish today, after the morning rain the sun came out and I didn't see a fish all day. Beautiful surroundings and a first go at fishing with the dog, walked up from the abbey and went round all 3 lakes, saw 1 other person on teifi other than that total isolation. Took a track back down to the abbey that was pretty tough going, seemed like multiple sheep trails over very boggy ground but for back in the end.

With the wild streams down to a bare trickle and overheating I thought I'd give these upland Llyns a try as the description on the WUF website sounded enticing - lots of big WBT, solitude, wild landscape - what could be better. I went for Llyn Hir as this is a natural lake and not a reservoir, and it's certainly a beautiful place. Access is very good and I was able to park very close to the water in an area often used as a campsite. In fact a few minutes after I arrived a couple of campers turned up obviously very disappointed that I got there first. So off they went to find somewhere else. 30 mins later another group of around 10 or 15 arrived on their way to the bothy 1/2 a mile away. So much for the solitude!!

After a cold night I got ready for some early morning fishing which looked promising, a gentle breeze blowing, good access to the water for casting. Didn't see any signs of fish but it was early, plenty of time for the fish to get going. I tried all sorts of flies, nymphs, wets, dries - everything. Not a sign of a fish the whole day. Went for a walk around the other lakes and had a chat with someone who was up there walking his dogs. He said that he fishes alot but was surprised to see me having a go. He was saying that the lakes fish well up until June and then are completely dead until September. So much for the fishing!!

In summary, I don't think that I'll try these Llyns again. If it's solitude you're after then this isn't the place to get away from the crowds. Over the day there were any number of walkers, day trippers, campers etc, even a group of wild swimmers turned up would you believe!! And the fishing, I'm sure it's better during the early and late months as the dog walker said.

Great day in the Welsh hills. Fishing was slow due to east wind and bright sun, but a few nice fish were caught especially on Llyn Egnant on the far bank. Several fish were around 1lb in weight, all released.
