A lovely spring day for trouting, river dropping, sun and cloud, although very few rising fish. 10 WBT caught and returned best circa 1.5 lbs. Effective patterns included Spiders, Adams dry and PTN. Thanks to all at WUF .

There were trout rising to a little hatch of march browns, LDOs and the odd stonefly about 2/3pm.
Caught one on an adams (16") and another on a small PTN (11"). Found no other trout to be obliging or rising after the showers started.

Wonderful day on a fantastic beat, good parking, easy access and good wading on a variety of water.

Started sunny with little SE breeze. Had confidence to change to spiders after OB report and had several fish at bottom of right bank at top of pool. Few flies or rises. Moved up to top of beat and had continued success with trout and lost a very good one. Fish stunningly beautiful in good condition and very very feisty. Day started turning at 1pm, clouds rolling in over hills and rising colder wind as predicted. Fearing end of fishing moved back down to end of best. Light rain began. On entering pool it was apparent something was happening- some fish splashing in shallower water, very eager to take spiders. Suddenly a switch was thrown, seemingly endless flotillas of smoky-grey winged olive uprights floated down and the entire pool was alive with rising fish. Switched as quickly as I could with shaking hands to a small Adams and caught/ released several. Suddenly after about 10 mins a switch was again thrown and everything stopped- a few flies drifted past and a few fish rose but otherwise the pool was totally dead. I was stunned and amazed- my first experience of a large hatch and rise ever. Wish I'd had a camera to film it as I was busy fishing in the middle of it all- but the memories will last a lifetime.
Thank you for the opportunity you afforded me- hopefully some more to come.

There was a rise just after mid-day of LDO's, MB's and I what I think were stonefly. I caught one 16" trout on an adams and one 11" on a small PTN. The rain come intermittently from 2/3, after that the rises stopped and I couldn't tempt anything else.

River dropping after wash-off the day before, very clear. Cold downstream wind, bright sun all day. Very small hatch of upwings at 1pm, caught and returned 2 trout on dries from bottom pool, then later on 1 on a nymph under a dry in faster run.

Day 1 of the season for me. 3 fish to 1.5lbs. First 2 on March Brown dry. Last fish black Wooly Bugger. Cracking hatch in the middle of the day 11.30am-12.45pm, then quiet. Sun blazing hot - 16 degrees. No cloud. Missed 2 on dries before I caught in the morning, and then missed another in the evening shortly before my last fish. This one felt heavy and attacked the steamer, rod tip bouncing, then was off.

It has become difficult in recent years. Instead of Autumn arriving fairly reliably, Summer goes on a while longer. Whilst Autumn is more in evidence this year, water isn't. It seems to go from tomato soup and rather deep and fast to nearly nothing. Today it was low and dropping fast with no rain forecast for another week at least; in other words, maybe by the end of the season. I wonder if the season could be extended by a week or maybe to 31st October....
A few salmon were showing and I did hook one. I thought I'd hooked a rockand pulled the line. The 'rock' shook violently and swam off!
I also saw a poacher. I ha phoned NRW who were just about useless. I've written about this to the WUF too.

What a disastrous day.... It started off well. When we arrived the river as at a nice height and little colour. We each caught 5 trout in the same 15 minutes. Then..... The river rose by 18 inches in half an hour. I was in the middle and couldn't believe how quickly the conditions changed. It became very dangerous and not fishable - and the water turned to tomato soup! I exited the river as fast as I could. We did stay in the hope the water would fall towards the end of the afternoon. It didn't much and not enough to attempt to fish.
