Unfortunately the coloured run off from the Irfon which was in flood the previous day, made fishing very difficult

River very low. Concentrated on the southern section. Very few flies flying and few rises. Tried nymphs and kept catching good sized shads.

Stayed at the Pantry B and B in Erwood. Excellent and right next door to the Wheelwright pub so short walk home after dinner.

Small dry flies accounted for the trout (and a 2lb chub).
Shad took swung wet flies intended for fry-chasing trout seen flashing in the deeper channel.
Just a couple of pulls earlier in the day on heavy nymphs in fast water. Nothing stuck.

3 on beaded nymphs in fast water, 2 on dry flies upstream late afternoon where fish rose consistently for around 2 hours. Not clear what they were eating but a size 20 klink accounted for one and size 14 copper coloured dry was snapped up on landing.
Lots of on and offs with both methods . It was good to see plenty of activity in unpromising hot and bright conditions. A good variety of insects over and on the water and spotted a bullhead in the shallows.

The Wye is low and clear …. Looking better than for the last couple of years. Boy was it cold …. Bonkers to have numb fingers after being soaked in sweat last week. There was a good hatch in progress when we arrived late morning…, olives , yellow May duns, mayflies and a smattering of what may be yellow mayflies …. Potamanthus luteus …. Although didn’t get close enough for positive ID. The fish were looking up initially but activity tailed off in to the afternoon as the temperature dropped . We had 10 tubby trout between us, the best 13” before the icebergs started to float past at 6 pm and we called it a day to retreat to the car to warm up. All fish on dries and safely returned .
