Quite a bit of flow in the river today. No grayling caught but that was probably down to my poor Euro nymphing technique! More lessons are needed!

I did see a good salmon near the waterworks, however!

We fished just for the morning in the upper section only. The river felt faster than two weeks ago. Studded wader boots were a big plus.

All of the fish were small and quickly returned.
Unless Dolmeudwy’s run’s are fished from the right bank, ( lumpy wading and standing on fish), there is little to offer trout fishers at this height. Still, a pleasant day on the river searching for fish.
On a more positive note, I saw a decent sized salmon moving up. Although obviously a stale fish, it didn’t appear to have any fungal lesions that I’ve seen on a number of fish in the lower river these past months.
A welcome sight indeed.

Introduced a work colleague to grayling fishing today…. A good beat to learn on with friendly wading. The grayling weren’t as co-operative as last week but showed enough interest for my colleague to bag his first ones ever. Significant interest too at the end of the day when fishy activity was noted which didn’t fit the usual pattern. Turned out to be a shoal of dace which were great fun for the last hour of the day when 8 came to hand. Good to see them ….16 fish in total, 8 grayling, 8 dace between us.

Theres been a bit of rain so river has had a bit of a flush through. Dropping back down again though. The day started as we parked up …. Two other anglers were peering off Llanstephan bridge so went and said hello, they were the rods on Gromain for the day. Was good to chat.
On walking down to the river we were greeted by 4 cormorants on the best pool followed by 3 goosanders – not a good start. There was a tricky downstream breeze, with little insect life and no visibly rising fish to be seen. Not a good omen. And fishing the usual glides brought no response. However it was a very different story in the faster water at the top of the beat. There was a significant head of 2 year old grayling in the 8 to 10 inch category willing to rise to a fly… and even a couple of this years 2 inchers joined in. Bigger fish and trout were largely absent although a couple did come to hand.
We finished with 39 fish to our parachute dries – not bad on a day that didn’t look promising initially. Best grayling 17”, best trout 18”.
Knotweed logged with Louis and the team for attention - and theres a large owl who always escorts us off the beat when we leaving in the evening, if it’s a tawny it’s the biggest I have ever seen!

Water very low, and weather very warm. Two very's in the the same sentence. One fish hooked and lost on a size 6 Green Highlander.

More water please, as time is running out.
