The weather was perfect fishing weather, overcast, dark clouds, often followed with bouts of rain (circa 20 degrees throughout the day), but on the flip side, the river had come off of the weeks earlier water level highs, and was now back to it’s lower summer levels (river height of 0.41m high at the Mordiford station for 25th July 2020). Nonetheless, any days a good day to be out on the river bank, and fishing. A beautiful stretch of water this, with a variety of swims that’ll give you a chance of catching in most conditions.

Fished through the middle of the day, 7hr stretch from 9:30am - 16:30pm; fishing as I call it “the upstream end rapids peg”. Started off steadily, which proved to be correct, feeding light, catapulting 8mm pellets sparing into the peg every 20 - 30mins, fishing a banded 10mm pellet on the hook behind a 35g bomb. No ground bait used (tipped it into the grass on leaving), and although I tried luncheon meat, no bites on that either.

Caught two barbel (circa 5lb & 1.5lb), one chub (circa 3.5lbs), and nine chublets. Lost what I suspect would have been my biggest barbel to bad angling, when it snapped me off at the swivel. Although I’d set my baitrunner clutch correctly, I’d forgotten to have slackened off on the mainline clutch. As soon as I disengaged the baitrunner, boom, snap, fish gone. Seemed a large powerful fish ............... ah pooh.

Anyway, that’s for another time, and as Arnie says “I’ll be back”.

Tight lines everyone.

After meeting Monty on arrival he very kindly told us the swims and how they’ve been fishing. Top bloke who clearly takes a lot of pride in making sure the fishermen enjoy the day as much as possible. We started fishing the pot and early on it was very slow. Decided to move about and had several chub mainly on the float. Headed back to the pot later in the day and produced the first barbel again on the float. Thoroughly enjoyable day made all the better from having the knowledge about the whole beat from Monty. Will be back.

Our first time on this beat and we were seriously impressed ... one day wasn't anything like enough time to explore this beat properly. We met Monty who was very knowledgeable and gave us some great information regarding the beat.
We didn't weigh any of the barbel but most were around the 7Ib mark.
Many thanks Monty & W&U.

Tough day with the conditions, bright warm sun in the morning with the river clearing and lowering. Couple of chub from the pot, and another along with a foul hooked pike and an eel further up the stretch in the slower water. Then fished up at the stile until dusk with no fish to show. Thank you Monty for giving us a warm welcome, as well as his team for looking after stretch so well. Will be back again

River looked good and the weather appeared perfect, usually conducive to catching during the afternoon. However most of the barbel again came in the evening.

A really good day out with my son. Fishing was excellent and the owner made us feel very welcome. We will be back. All fish caught on feeder.
