Having had a taster session here two weeks ago, I decided to explore the beat again today. On a pretty nice day, albeit with a stregthening easterly breeze, there was nowhere near as much morning and afternoon fly as two weeks back, and fly appeared much later in the morning as well. Many fewer OUs in particular but there were some of these, plus some olives, large brook duns and latterly some mayfly, then lots of midge and sedges. Rising fish, of which there were more than enough, some of which were seen clearly to take duns but many others were nymphing, were pretty picky to emerger patterns and, in retrospect, I should have spent more time using light nymphs and spiders. That said, nine fish with many of 14-15", took olive and hare's ear emergers. A somewhat frustrating day at times with an important old lesson re-learnt!

First time here..lovely beat with varied water. The slight upstream breeze turned into unhelpful cold east wind. However there are numerous sheltered spots both above and below the bridge.
Had success with various dries for 10 WBT - best was 18 inches which took a elk hair emerger pattern.

Three rods fished and we couldn't believe the river was fishable after the day before - it was choclate brown and swollen. We had been washed off Fenny Fach on the Saturday.
Penpont on the Sunday was fine, slightly more colour but well fishable. My friends Peter and Marco mainly fished dry they both caught well, I fished mainly on nymph and caught some good fish biggest around the 2lb mark. Still lots of Mayfly around.

Following yesterday's marathon, managed a couple of hours only in the morning to no great effect other than to enjoy the Usk valley.

Had a lovely day on this beautiful beat , I had just driven up from London and had arrived in paradise , the level was good , nice warm day , lots of fly around, counted at least 5 different species , there was lots of hawthorn flies too , there were sporadic rises all day.
I fished dry right through the day using midge patterns , plume tips and even small mayfly patterns (Danica) .
There was a nagging down stream wind which hampered presentation but this was my first real dry fly fishing this season so I persisted. Probably would have connected with more fish on nymph in streamier water. Ended up with 5 good fish lost around the same number .
Lovely day .

Unforgiving and b'tard head wind (at least Force 7!) hampered what would have been an epic visit. Midge in the morning gave way to clouds of upwings from lunch, mainly olive uprights. Low water kept the clunkers down but there were no end of wild fish to 12 inches rising sporadically. Given difficult casting and spooky fish, perhaps 'cos of wretched otter that plagued my steps (but at least did give good photo opportunities) the score was lower than it might have been, but who's counting in such a magical place.

A difficult day on the dries as only one smallish section had any significant amount of trout rising. The fish we did get were a good size on olive patterns. The wind was quite strong downwind which did not help our upstream dry fly casting but we rose and lost a few others too so reasonable action. No evening rise. We watched an otter from the high bank swimming under the water and popping its head up now and again - magical ! Will return as I'm sure there will be better rises on other days.

Started with French Nymphing which went very well with 12 fish caught in rapid succession, to 18inches, so decided to switch to dry fly. Well that was different, with fish refusing offerings and ignoring my verbal demands that they should take! Managed 3 more on duo set up to finish the day at a score draw; angler verses fish.

Nil. Bit of a freak heatwave - 22 degrees - in Brecon for the 3 hours I had spare to fish the beat on Saturday. The fish must have gone to the beach for the day :). Wish I had!

Nice hatch of olives, all fish taken on dries. Good stretch of water with some nice variation. Some of the wading was on gravel so easier than many other places on the upper river.
