We only fished the river from late afternoon as we travelled up from Kent in the morning. The river was running fairly high and coloured but was clearing as we fished into the evening. There were a few trout rising to the hatches later in the day, but none could be tempted by our flies.

River low and clear. Best fish was between 1.5 and 2lb most fish taken upstream nymphing, more surface activity after it started raining and did it rain, absolutely soaked by the time I packed in. All fish in lovely condition and were returned. Best of the three days fishing.

Arriving in the morning, the weather was great and the odd fish was rising. Fishing through a few of the pools I took a few nice Brownies on an olive dry fly imitation.
And the odd fish on the nymph.

After stopping for a bite to eat. The heavens opened up and after getting soaked, So I decided to call it a day.

As always a great day out spent on the water.

A mild and sunny day. Fished all afternoon going through the fly box with drys and nymphs but with only 2 takes to small black gnats. A stark contrast to Friday's fishing in Abergavenny on a wild blowy day when the fish were savagely taking mayflys and large olives.

Very strong (and cold!) wind made this a difficult day, but managed 6 wbt between us (best about 2lbs).
All caught on nymph/spider patterns.
Sporadic hatches throughout the day prompted us to try dries at the very few rising fish, but nothing could be tempted.

Lovely beat. Sadly the weather meant very few fish on top despite huge hatches coming off about 2pm. A parachute olive did the trick between 2 & 3pm. Fish in good condition.

Three permits were purchased but due to illness only two fished. The river was flowing rapidly. No fish were hooked.

A stunning day to be on the river. 4 fish caught all taken on a rusty coloured klinkhammer. Stalked on fish for nearly and hour who was constantly sipping off the surface. After several drifts and several fly changes finally hooked up only to see it bolt down stream and take me right down to the backing, 5mins later was drawing him over the net only for the hook to pull out about 2 feet short of the net!!! I reckon he was pushing 4lb or so.

A fine days fishing with trout rising to LDOs, a good hatch of March Browns was largely ignored along with the odd late Grannom. Most fish were taken on Olive F fly, 2 to Cock winged dun and one to a grannom pupa.

The Usk in fine fettle, excellent height (1ft on Brecon guage) and reasonably clear.
A steady trickle of flies coming off from about midday. Mostly LDO's. 3 fish caught on nymphs, largest about 14". All retured.
The real action came at about 6pm. A large fish was sipping flies constantly in the pool just below the left hand bend on the lower half of the beat. It lazily took my Adams parachute and I immediatley knew I was into a big fish. After several minutes of heavy, muscular runs he came to the net. After 7 years of fishing the Usk this was my biggest wbt by a country mile. I measured it using my net at 20 inches, a deep fish with big shoulders. My best estimate would be 3 1/2 lbs. Returned him safely, hands shaking. A fish of a lifetime.
I notice that M.D. of Surbiton hooked into a similar fish on Sunday. Same one maybe?
