My father, brother and I fished Fenni Fach on April 22nd with only one trout caught between us all. My brother caught a lovely 2lb brownie with his second or third cast of the day on a nymph pattern but otherwise it was tough going with plenty of wind and plenty of rain. We saw a few rises over the course of the rive including what may have been a salmon but the hatches were fairly sporadic.

No fish taken. Despite being three experienced river anglers we failed to catch more than one trout between us. The temperature had dropped suddenly after several warm days and it was cold. (Back to the car at lunchtime to sit with heater on.) There was a hatch of March Browns for a very short spell around mid-day when the one trout was caught on a dry MB pattern. I had fish rising around me in a pool but with plenty of naturals to feed on it was difficult to tempt them to my artificial. Other than that, no fish seen. Still enjoyable to fish the Usk in beautiful surroundings. Thank you.

Arrived to find the river in fine fettle and although there was a steady trickle of LDOs coming off for most of the day there was no hatch and only little surface activity. Started exploring with the duo and SC took four fish to 15 inches in one pool. The first took the nymph but the next the klink. The nymph was dispensed with and the others were also taken on the surface. Explosive takes in fairly turbulent water. So by mid morning this was heading for a red letter day. Every pool with similar characteristics was thoroughly explored but frustratingly the earlier success was not matched. SC added only one more fish. Meanwhile JT who had missed out on the early action had a couple of fish to hand and rose a few to the dry. So another long and tiring day ended with a respectable number of fish yet we felt disappointed as we had started so well. Had the fish come at the death we would have claimed to have cracked it. Fenni Fach is a glorious stretch of water with easy access, excellent stiles and good parking. Thanks go to DJP, the owner, who stopped by for a chat.

Beautiful day to be out on the river but slow fishing. Pleased to catch and return two fish of 10 & 12"on a GBHE nymph and dry March Brown imitation. Short March Brown rise got the fish going at about 12.30 but otherwise they showed little interest in the sporadic rises of smaller fly.

Quiet cold day with 2 fish caught and 2 lost. Both caught on the dry, one on an olive and one on a Klinkhammer. Plenty of fish moving but not that interested in my presentation. While wading can be tricky, this is an excellent beat with great opportunity for a good fisherman.

A chilly but enjoyable day. In the sun shine it felt reasonably warm but during the wintry showers (which left the highest mountains briefly white) it was bitter. 3 brownies were caught, all on bead head GRHE nymphs, the best measuring 13.5", the others 11,5" and 10". Other fish were contacted and lost including one of about a pound (hooked and nearly brought to hand on a small DHE) and another of nearer 2lbs than 1lb hooked on a nymph. A fantastic mixed hatch of LDO and march brown duns lasted about 40 mins from 2pm and numerous trout came out to play. However, they were extremely selective and our flies were treated with almost total disdain. The rocks were slippery and as we'd been advised the wading was "exciting". Two separate parties of 5/6 canoes made their way past us while we fished.

The day started off very well with 10 fish to the net and a few dropped in the first two hours on upstream nymphs. Then an early lunch waiting for the much anticipated olive hatch. The hatch happened as expected, but the fish just didn't respond. Only a handful of fish seen rising throughout, but none taken. Can't put my finger on it as there could've been many reasons why the fish were reluctant to rise. One more fish on nymphs finished of our day. Lovely day to be on the water even with a few hairy moments whilst deep wading as the water was a bit higher than I have experienced on this beat. Will be back again with the warmer weather and lower flow.
