Struggled today, a contrast from my last visit three weeks ago. For some reason the colder unsettled weather seemed to put the grayling off the feed though I tried my usual range of tactics. Oh well, better next luck next time.

Fished from 10 a.m. and finished early, quite chilled at about 4.30 p.m. Water 1'2" on the Llanstephan guage and quite nippy at eight degrees. Fairly calm and cloudy for most of the day but a bit of a cold upstream wind, mid-afternoon. Definitely now time for the LJs and also for another top layer next time out - winter cometh! Pale wateries and a few olives appeared early afternoon which induced fish to rise. Whilst fly was still around when I left, the fish pretty much stopped rising at about 3.30 p.m. Had about a third of the fish on nymphs (FBPTN, pink shrimp and Duracell) and the rest on a small light hare's ear Duck's Dun which, as over the last few weeks up north, seems to have induced fish rising to PWs and olives to take up top. Best OOS trout 14" and the rest 10-12", and most grayling 10-12" with a couple of 13-14" fish as well. Must stay warmer next time out!

First time on a WUF beat, first time for grayling and trying out a new rod, so a lot to get used to. The river was low but clear and over a full day two grayling came to the net along with a tiny brown trout. Nothing rising so nymphing was the method and the successful flies were a gold head hares ear and a gold head pink nymph. Did see a salmon splashing it's way upstream. Overall a pleasant introduction to the WUF waters.

No fish rising but managed a good sized grayling and a couple of out of season WBT. Very pleasant in the morning, clouding over in the pm.

River low and clear with some of the pools appearing unproductive in the low flows (to my novice eye). Full floater with a very small red shrimp pattern landed a 38" coloured cock from the Gravelly pool, after a lengthy fight!

Very tough day - the advice about the wading being difficult was certainly correct! Appeared lifeless for the first couple of hours (arrived just after 12) but then suddenly fish started rising. One grayling took a dry Grayling Steel Blue but came off and the fish then always seemed to remain just out of reach. Beautiful spot - we will return!

Having failed to catch a salmon at Gromain on Friday, Karen and I had a second attempt on the beat above on Saturday. With pleasant weather and the water at about 12" on Llanstephan gauge we were both optimistic. I managed a coloured hen of perhaps a little over 10lbs from the lower end of the top planks, deftly unhooked and released in the water by Karen without any handling. Despite fishing 'til dusk it was the only salmon for the day. Karen did manage a nice grayling of about 1.5lbs on a CDC emerger during a break from swinging the double-hander. Another highly enjoyable day on a picturesque beat.

River quite high and coloured. Managed only a couple of takes before I lost my footing in front of the Lower Planks section and dropped my rod into deep water. Hopefully, it may appear when the river levels fall! If anyone retrieves a Guideline Fario 4 weight with Hardy reel I'd be grateful if you let me know on 01235 816861 or inform the Wye and Usk foundation. Many thanks. Roy Pettipher.
