The day promised much - warm and bright with the river looking super and continuing to drop. But no-one told the trout - where were they all? We saw much more salmon activity then trout - 3 grilse & 3 bigger fish - but not organised for them today. Little insect life - a few yellow may duns, medium olives and a couple of mayflies and we struggled. 2 nice wbt 9 + 12 inches on para dries but most rises were oncers. Never mind - we will be back!

A 15lb Salmon was hooked on second cast by Green Bank Pool. It was on for 10 minutes prior to flipping off. A small brownie was also hooked, landed and returned.
The land owner was at his Lodge and was very helpful with advice etc.

River in perfect order with a couple of salmon showing and one big swirl at the fly but unfortunately nothing biting.

River was a little high but clarity fairly good. Not much evidence of rising fish but a reasonable number of upwings coming off for most of the day. Too high to reach or see the usual pools. I mainly fished the slower margins and edge of the main channel. A dozen trout and a single tiny grayling came mostly on a black magic nymph but a there were a number of rises to pale evening duns and cdc olives. Best of the day was a 13" wbt that came up to an olive dapped in the fast water below ciliau falls and rocks when a stiff breeze picked up around 3.30pm.
Great day out.

24" on the Llanstephan gauge is too high to fish this beat for wbt effectively. It's just that bit too high to wade across and up some of the magical pools this beat holds.
Nymphed a couple of smaller trout out and was rewarded with a really hard fighting 12"er on a Yellow May pattern.
It seems the smaller streams were the places to be mid May 2014, with perhaps these bigger pieces of water a month or so behind. Wiser WUF regulars would be a better judge than me to determine whether this is normal / late. I can't help feeling the latter as the hatches have been pretty good and consistent but the fish don't seem to be switched on in numbers.

Having driven from Goodrich Court as we felt the river was too dirty there, we found Ty-Newydd in fine form, if a little bright. A very enjoyable days fly fishing. Between us we saw one salmon in the Bathing Pool and one in the Spout. No fish caught though.
There is quite a big willow trunk and branches that could do with cutting free from the top planks.

Perfect weather conditions apart from river a lot higher than expected and most of the "shape" of the river disappears.
Being a big river it was difficult getting at any fishy water. Plenty of olives hatching, Plenty of yellow May Duns around lunch time but no fish rising. No fish caught
Had a pint at The Griffin £3:45 a pint!

1 decent WBT plus 1 very small fish caught on black dry fly in 1st 10 mins then nothing all day. Small hatch of Mayfly but not taking. Tried every pattern but still no joy. Still a nice day on great stretch of river. Highlight was seeing the otter, made it all worthwhile.

River was at normal level and running pretty clear.
Up stream dry fly was used throughout the day.
Some sections of this beat can be quite challenging for the novice wader or those not accustomed to larger rivers, such as myself and my companion.
Fish were seen rising throughout the day, numbers of fish caught was only limited by our skill and ability.
Beautiful area I'd thoroughly recommend giving this beat a visit.
8 Brown Trout and 1 out of season Grayling all safely returned.
