A beautiful early morning start led to 1 brown trout taking a motana caught late morning. I let the current bring the fly through the fast flow and the fish took after a few casts. A few knocks the rest of the day, some regular locals gave some very friendly and helpful advice which was very welcoming.
I will be returning to this beat :)

Used dry flys. Generally a sunny day with some cloud. No fish taken and only saw small fry. Tried the Castle Meadows side - plenty of dog walkers and families around with both dogs and children playing in the river. We tried the other side of the river by parking on the layby on the A465 but we couldn't find the stile which either doesn't exist or is hidden by the undergrowth - there was just a fence topped with barbed wire so don't bother trying to access the river this way.

Weather report suggested a cloudy day but instead it was a beautiful day in Abergavenny with a river full of dogs and swimmers. I arrived at 18:30 and practiced casting for a couple hours. At 20:30 it became darker and quieter, and by 21:00 trout were rising frequently in the slower water and I attempted to catch them on a winged brown dry fly. Unfortunately I still didn't manage to catch any!

No fish caught as I spent my time receiving casting instruction rather than attempting to catch trout. I did however see some trout rising for the yellow mayflies that were emerging.

Due to sunny weather the river was entirely taken up with people, their dogs and their children running in and out of the water, swimming and throwing stones. If it’s sunny do not book.
WUF note: This is advice that is worth considering, especially when thinking of booking beats that are close to towns in hot weather and at weekends. With foreign holidays again mostly off the cards this summer, we expect the levels of unwanted intrusion on riverbanks to be high. Please be aware of this when you are thinking of booking, especially in July and August.
