A quiet morning on the fish front fished from 8-11:30, a small hatch was starting as I left however I wasn’t able to stay longer enough to see if it brought rising fish.

Two of us on this beat on what felt like a proper Spring day. You would have bet on a decent hatch today but almost no bugs materialised. So we scratched around. My companion did manage a couple of fish on dries and, later, one on a streamer. And I caught a few, here and there, on nymphs. A funny old day then.

The river is pretty full of water which makes it the more daunting I find. But there was a very brief hatch at midday-ish and I found the odd fish willing to look at a jingler, one of which was a lovely fish of 2lb.

The beat was carrying some extra water which made for some adventurous wading. I didn’t see any rising fish all day except for one towards evening. I caught on nymphs mainly in the morning before the mist burned off but then on and off through the day.

Stunning fishery. The gin clear water and low levels made wading somewhat easier, but approaching a fish proved difficult. We did manage to hook a Brown Trout in a streamy run on a nymph, but after a series of acrobatic leaps it threw the hook.

Lovely stretch of the Usk, clear and sunny day. Plenty of fish seen and a few lost. Only fished half of the beat as two kayakers were doing multiple runs of the upper stretch. Given how spooky the trout had been until this point thought I’d only be wasting my time to carry on.
