First day of a 5 day break on the Wye for 2 of us and joined by a friend for today. The most successful day of our trip in terms of numbers caught, from a river slightly up and coloured. After driving 175 miles in the rain it stopped shortly after we arrived and we settled into swims upstream of the parking area . 1 rod caught 13 barbel, 1 caught 8 barbel and 2 chub and the other caught 4 barbel . The best barbel was 7lb 15oz and all were caught on variations of the pellet and open ended feeder approach .

Down to the river at 9:45 following a late finish the night before at Holme lacy 4. River up 1m and coloured. Walked the beat only 3 swims fish able very overgrown. Made base at 1st swim vanstone pool. 3 oz feeder wouldn't hold. Fished close in with a 2.5 lead and caught 4 barbel all on robin red pellets. Fished over a bed of hemp under the willow. All barbel caught before the rain started(2pm) then no more bites. Had an eel earlier on as well in the same swim. Plenty of salmon leaping! Largest barbel 8lb on the nose!

Great beat would fish again. Thanks W&U

River was high but weather was good. We fished at the top end of the section as most of the other swims were unfishable.
5 barbel and a small chub caught between us although all were caught from the last swim on the stretch.

After Catching last weekend I probably deserved a through skunking which is what I was resolved to after 9hrs casting. However at 8pm I received some confirmation for my efforts while fishing deep with a Toby in the Vanstone tail, I think I probably inadvertently conducted an upstream induced take manoeuvre which an unfortunate Salmon begrudgingly accepted. Having seemingly learnt my lesson from the lost fish last week my upgraded single hook held as the fish went berserk and I played it cool enough to put the net under a silver 16lbs – result! Fished the beat through lovely wading water under the castle, no fish seen moving anywhere seemingly gone to ground in the deeper holes? Barbless hook came out in the weigh net again, fish away strong.

Water starting to fine down but still well up. Hazy sunshine, water temp. still only 5c. Air got up to 10c, no wind. Went right down to lower limit. First cast only 3ft from the side, a barbel at 8lb 8oz. Mate then had a barbel and a chub all on halibut pellit. Moved up to Rope Pool opposite trees had a barbel and a chub.
Moved again to the upper limit and had a barbel and 5 more chub. All fish came to halibut pellet with a 4oz feeder. Water still cold, move on to Courtfield for the last day.

Moonhead bevan had a 9:3 barbel on 2nd cast ever into the Wye in a slack water eddy (pellet feeder). River extremely high, couldn't hold bottom with 10oz gripper feeder current was pushing way too fast to fish but we stuck it out fishing the slack water spots, could only fish 2 foot of the bank or current would take your rig downstream. Stayed all day but only one fish for MH, blankety blank for me. Never mind there's always next time!

1 Barbel
