This was my first visit to the Wye and it won't be my last. The White House stretch is in a beautiful setting and provides a variety of swim types - from shallow glides to deeper runs and holes. Although we enjoyed moderate success, it was a blazing hot day with full sun most of the time. The fish seemed to feed better at both ends of the day and when the sun was less bright. We stayed at the White Lion in Ross which was ideal - very friendly and comfortable and run and frequented by anglers. Booking the tickets from the Wye & Usk Foundation was very straightforward and the staff were extremely helpful.

Nice stretch of river. 5 chub and 1 barbel approximately 7lb.
Be wary of nasty snags in the lower section. Although I took three good size chub from here it cost me in tackle. Definitely returning to this beat.

First 500 mile return trip of the season to the Wye and as usual worth it
7am start and 3 Barbel in the first three casts, followed 3 chub. Went quiet until 10:45am when the biggest Barbel of the day was banked (8lbs 11oz) quickly followed by another smaller one and another chub. Then the sun broke through and it quickly became hot and all bites stopped. Not another touch until 8pm when three more Barbel were caught along with another Chub.
All fish taken on pellet and feeder, mainly halibut pellets. All fish in excellent condition. Fish seemed to be in the deeper water farthest away from the car park (Anglers on the far bank also caught).
Fish ranged from 6lbs 3oz to 8lbs 11oz
Back Soon!!!

3 barbel, 6lb 13oz, 6lb 5oz and one about 4lb, plus 1 chub about 4lb. All caught in the late afternoon/early evening from the woods section on sausage pellet.
Well worth the 170 mile round trip, will be back.

Water pump was very noisy and irritating, on for seven hours a day. Only time for fishing was early morning, or evening.

Too much colour? Too much sun? Who knows; the conditions were just about as good as it gets. Fished the beat through but alas, not a fish to the fly....
Maybe next time!

Blank for salmon; a few accidental trout on pool tails. "Occasional showers, locally heavy" proved an accurate forecast today. Lightning, thunder and then intense hail. Caught out in the middle of a field I abandoned the carbon rod and the metal wading staff for a time while flashes into the ground lit up the general area. I sat on the grass like Buddha hoping that my profile was suitably low. The river was already colouring up when I left.

I landed 4 well mended kelts and had a nice looking follower to the high bank. Fished hard in challenging weather conditions but no ultimate reward for me today. Thank you.

Water level was just right but as a bit of colour still evident I went for a larger tungsten tube fly at 1.5 inch, a cascade pattern with lots of sparkle. A shortish 5 foot tip on a 5 foot super fast sinking leader on the end of an intermediate/ sink #2 tip shooting head. All this effort paid off at 3pm with a fine silver 7.5lb hen fish that went ballistic. Weigh-netted a released safely after a quick photo in the net, for the non believers!
