Caught a 2lb Shad at the Stream, just outside the fishing hut, on a salmon lure.

I had no luck at the Rock pool, so tried a small buzzer on a light trout rod and caught 3 lovely wild brown.

Tricky fishing but very enjoyable- hut could do with a clean up.

Despite the one foot lift in the upper river earlier in the week, the Llanstephen gauge was back down at 8" by the time I pitched up at riverside at The Rock at 8.30 am. The water was clear, even if would have preferred another foot. The Rock only gave up a feisty brownie on my Usk Grub. Fished down through the Mill Stream and into the Rectory Neck. Not a peep. And the blazing sunshine probably didn't help. I fished these down a few times and was off by 1pm for the long drive home. Two other anglers were booked for today but I didn't see them. I suspect that the earlier rain may benefit the middle Wye beats - the Upper Wye may have to wait for a more substantial flood. Beautiful though, as always.

Water low, cool and clear. No salmon seen and very little trout activity .
Sparse hatch of Mays and Yellow Sally. Dense midge hatch at midday, most pleasing for swifts and martins.

No salmon, the river is low, saw two moving through the neck of rock pool. The trout were out in force, saw a few hatches lots of surface activity. A few had a go at my Willie gun not massive fun on a 14ft rod however, bute kept the day interesting. Should have probably booked the day as trout, as the river was full of life and gin clear.

I wasn’t expecting to catch today but from what I could gather the river was up 6” this week and a change in weather might’ve stirred a Salmon from its slumber down in the deeper pools but the river looked as though it’d dropped back down to its bones overnight. I gave Mill Stream, Neck of Rectory into Rectory a few hours on the fly but didn’t get a pull or see any sign of a Salmon.
There were a few fish rising to the very sparse number of flies so I nipped back to the car for my trout gear and promptly caught a nice OOS Grayling on a dry fly to save a blank before heading home before the rain.
Just an observation but I’ve fished the Tay, Tweed, Swale and Hampshire Avon in the past week and all were alive with aquatic fly life of all varieties but the Wye in comparison seems lifeless.
