First time on the Wye a bit daunting as I'm used to small streams took me a few hours to work out fished weighted nymphs through the gutters and took 5 fish including best trout 14 inches and a similar sized grayling, tried dries but as it was bright and sunny nothing was coming up at all. Break for afternoon then picked up again at 6 hard going at first but was lucky enough to be in the middle of a mayfly spinner fall from around 8.30 took 5 in the next 30 mins including one Dace the rest were grayling missed countless takes as well and lost a few to boot. In my dreams I will be in the Wye during a spinner fall! One thing to note the beat limits have changed and the owner of the lower beat fiercely challenged me as to where I started fishing which was right place per the revised beat map which I shared with him just be aware of the changes or I suspect he'll run you off.

Inspite of having fished here 4 times this year already and in past seasons, I still stupidly managed to fall foul of the am/pm beat swap, so with much embarrassment I made/make huge apologies to the Llanstephan rods. After making the original booking, I had to rearrange for the following day and then mistakenly made the "obvious" beat swap in my mind - instead of checking the details more keenly for the 4th Sunday in the month! Note to self and perhaps other beware, always check the details!
Lovely fly water at 1ft 4" but once again sadly I could not find a Salmon. Plenty of Shad coming to a fly, Trout and a 7" Grayling. The three casts for the day with the spinning rod were in Llangoed pool and resulted in a Pike.
Many thanks to WUF, "Wye not stop cafe" and all.

Perfect water on upper Wye, so my wife and I got the children covered and treated ourselves to two nights away at the wonderful Llangoed hall which enabled convenient access for fishing this beat. I fished the upper beat (17 mins brisk walk to the top end) from dawn returning to the hall for breakfast having caught lots of trout but no Salmon seen. After breakfast we parked at the top end and both enjoyed a wonderful morning on Dol-meudy and Orchard etc. Fishing the Dolmido stone at 1'10" while watching my wife casting a fly down through the Orchard catching trout was one of the most picturesque fishing scenes of my life anywhere - just a stunningly beautiful stretch and enticing place to fish. Quick lunch at the "Wye not stop cafe" (excellent) and drive to lower end of the beat to fish the Pump house run and tricky Llangoed gutters in the afternoon. My wife walked back to the hall while I tried the intriguing gutters once more but nothing seen. We caught numerous trout but did not even see a Salmon which was a little disappointing as a few had been caught locally. In hind sight perhaps we might have tried a spinner in the deep Llangoed pool (a major deep hole) but enjoying the good water we did not carry a spinning rod along but would do so if fishing here again.
Many thanks to all for a wonderful few days fishing in Wales.

A warm overcast day with a slight rise on the river and a little colour. Plenty of flies hatching from the early afternoon on, LDO's and various sedges and duns I didn't recognise. Fished a duo and caught 7 trout on the nymph, 2 of them around the 1lb mark, the rest a fair bit smaller - all returned. Lost three more and missed two rises to the dry. Also saw a salmon jump in LLangoed pool. A really enjoyable day.
