As we drove past Llyn Clywedog we observed a flat calm over the whole of the reservoir. However, on arrival at Bugeilyn there was a steady breeze creating a nice ripple on the water. Despite the cloudless sky fish were rising to what we worked out to be very small brown beetles, about the quarter of the size of a Coch-Y-Bonddu. After trying to match the hatch and only getting the fish to splash at our offerings we changed to basic hares ear pattern which the fish couldn't resist. By 3pm we decided to get out of the heat and take shelter in the boat house for refreshments. Fished again from 5pm for another couple of hours. Once again saw the Hen Harriors.

Fish rising from 1pm till 4pm, beautiful sunny and breezy afternoon. Docs Cock Robin took most of them and Clan Chief took the best fish. I did try an Irresistible Adam’s but couldn’t get one on a dry unfortunately. All beautiful hard fighting fish. I walked the 2.2 miles each way. You can very easily and safely drive a car to the Llyn.

The morning was spent fishing conventional wet flies on the left bank with no success. In the afternoon, I switched to a midge dry fly pattern on a long leader on the right bank fishing to rising fish. Two to the net with two further near misses.

Great location and good access all the way down with 4x4.
Shame about the beer cans all around the boat house! - cleared up and took away.

1230 - 1545 session. Cold at 8C with slight NE wind.
Would have seen 15-20 fish rise during the afternoon. Never found what they were rising to as no fish rose to a dry fly or wet fly with a lot of patterns tried. Also no fish seemed to rise twice. Very sporadic with some rising 5-10m out from the bank with others seen rising about 50m out.

Few small black gnats around the banks and edges. No other fly life seen, not a surprise in those conditions.

Look forward to returning a bit later in the spring.

Strong east wind and surprisingly cold in the morning. Still some near surface action with traditional wets. Coch y bonddu
also worked. Several fish missed or lost.

Bugeilyn fished very well and we caught more than enough in the 5 hour session. Claret the best colour and the small trout probably, pound for pound, the hardest hitting and fighting of all the Llynnoedd.

I remember when you used to find solitude at this venue; the Llyn is now being used regularly by the wooly hat swimming brigade, who are apparently entitled to disrupt paying anglers who arrived before them as they ‘pay subs to Canoe Wales’. It appears they are also entitled to allow their dogs to run free amongst the livestock.

Despite strong gusty winds trout were keen to take black hoppers on the surface. Only the west side of the lake was fishable due to the wind and as the afternoon rain arrived the cloud obscured the boat house while the opposite end of the lake was in sunshine. Over 30 fish netted between us with just as many lost or missed.
