Warm day which meant I had to go deep to entice the fish. 5 good sized fish to the net most on mallard and claret using a intermediate line.

Good day in perfect reservoir conditions. A few taken on dries, but majority on traditional wets, mallard and claret being the most successful, biggest fish around the 1 1/2 lb mark.

Well before venturing off to Beacons Resrevoir had to call into the garage just outside Leaominster , to stock up on some grub for the day. . . . Some serious man food was bought ( Ginsters pastie and a Yorkie bar ) classic easy fishing grub !!!!!
Was half ten when I tackled up , conditions looked good and there was a nice ripple and plenty of fish topping from all Over the lake . But looks can be deceiving they were a devil to tempt today . . . .
Tried various tactics , traditional wets just sub surface , nymphs , going as small as I could muster up and eventually had a confident take on a size eighteen suspender buzzer in black !!! A well marked angry brownie , to the net , and quickly released . . . . .
When the wind got up slightly the fish went down, and this happened all morning. For ten minutes when there was a dip in the breeze up they'd come taking what looked like very small emergers in the surface film .
I had another fish on and off very quickly on the same emerger , then another that felt like a decent fish . I chilled out for a bit at the top wooded end of the reservoir then worked my way back along the roadside shore.
Eventually I took my second fish to the net, a nice ten inch pristine conditioned Beacons brownie , wished him well and he was off like a shot !!!!!!
Again another fun few hours at this nice little water , always a shame about the litter but it's close to the main A470 and obviously using the bins provided is a real chore for people !!!!! Gggggrrrrrrr!!!!!
Having been in waders three days out of a five day break can't be bad at all , and Mrs A doesn't seem to mind either , as long as I do the mowing when Im back , , , ha ha ha !!!!!!! Had some fun on the Arrow and Stretford Brook , shall head up to the hills next week to good old Llyn Bugeilyn . . . . .

Not a touch unfortunately.Cold North East wind kept the temperature around 7C. A nice spot spoilt somewhat by the very noisy road in the background.

Well bowled up at tenish, weather overcast and cool with a slight ripple , and there was plenty of surface activity from the roadside shore , so dry fly tactics it was to be . . . . .
Fine Tippett , and long leader , I put on one of my home tied CDC emergers ,as the fish appeared to be taking midge in the surface. Sport was dam good from the off , and after fifteen minutes , had a feisty brownie coming to the net , followed by another on the next cast , it looked like it was going to be a red letter day !!!!!
The third fish again took the emerger static , hammering it and a satisfying thump thump at the rod tip !!! The drizzle soon put on its smiley face , cloud came really low , and a very cool wind from the dam end came into play !!!
This seemed to kill the fishing , and the trout weren't impressed with the weather conditions!! And neither was I tell you the truth !!!!!!!!! By half eleven it started to hammer it down and with the prevailing wind , totally ruined the sport .
I did put on a sink tip , varies fly changes , but had a hunch that that was going to be it for the day. I did hang in there till just gone oneish , however , even with varies tactics used , no joy , so did the wise decision and thought it time to get out of waders , get warm in the truck and have a brew from my flask . . . .
With the weather turning pretty dam unpleasant , was happy to bag three , maybe an earlier start would have been a wise choice but hey ho , thats fishing !!!!
On the way back , called in at the Honey Cafe in Bronllys and had a cracking cake and a large coffee , just the sustenance I needed on a dismal day , and a steady price too , highly recommended . . . .
Hoping weather improves , and we see some more sun like last weekend , shall give Claerwen a crack next time and of course my old favourite Bugeilyn , but they ll have to wait till next week , work gets in the way dam it !!!!!!!!!!!!

Been nearly a year since I've fished Beacons , so was nice to head off through the Brecon mountains to this pleasant lake . Was about eleven when I turned up , a nice ripple on the water , and lovely and sunny .
Fished the roadside shore right up to the wooded area , after having words with a chap ledgering and having the brass neck to make a real mess of the bank , digging for worms !!!!! I did ask also if he had a rod licence as well . . . . . . The usual " what's one of those " was the reply !!!! Any way after giving him suitable words in his shell like , he left very promptly !!!!
There were some buzzers shucks on the water by midday ish , so fished a long leader , fine tippet and a team of two buzzers , black and green home tied ones . . . . .
Things were quiet initially , but then takes started coming around oneish , and netted three cracking brownies in about twenty minutes , the last two coming an hour or so later .
The water quality here is superb , with plenty of fry and small fish in the margins . I'm sure evening sport would have been execllent this evening , but was happy with a tally of five , ranging from nine to twelve inches , so called it a day at fourish .
I did meet another chap at the lake , who is in the Ospreys angling club , and he mentioned that dry fly sport can be excellent , although , as with all wild brownies , they aren't a soft touch and matching the hatch is key . . . . . .
Shall head down to Beacons again next month , with the weather improving , its time to hit the banks of the Arrow and Lugg.
WUF POACHING INFO : Due to the fact phone reception isn't feasible in the Brecon Beacons , I wasn't able to pass on the details of the chap poaching , on to the NRW POACHING LINE. However maybe yourselves and C. T. who fished it recently may keep a look out for the vehicle he was driving , WHITE FOCUS ST. REG : CT17 CUJ . if you happen to see it there again !!!!!!!!

A tough but enjoyable day. The only hatch in evidence was midge and around 5 of the fish took emerging midge patterns. All others were caught on various traditional wets.
