Great secluded location, but quite hard going with weather and river conditions

A nice beat with a good variety of swims
A couple of Barbel lost to hook pulls during the afternoon left me a little frustrated, however lots of chub kept me entertained and 3 barbel in the early evening made the walk back up cardiac hill worth while

As expected a long day on a low clear river. Made the long trek up to the top end and the shallower more oxygenated water. Despite seeing barbel in the area in the morning didn't catch until last 30 mins of daylight when BS and I had one each around 6lb.

Lots of fun during day trying to catch dace on float fished sweetcorn, with each bite came the expectation that it would be a decent chub but sadly not to be. BS had one decent chub - 3.12 on the feeder.

Narrow footbridge is still a pain in the neck requiring several trips to get rucksack, rods, chair and bait bucket across it and middle stile is in a very poor state of repair and really needs looking at before someone comes unstuck crossing it.

Canoeists were well behaved and sociable on the whole and once they stopped we had a couple of visits from the local otter that appears to have a holt part way down the beat.

Arrived late but temperature still around 27 degrees when I started fishing around 17.00 hrs in bright sunshine. River back to normal summer level and clear. Action started after a couple of hours, with three decent barbel, all on sweetcorn and feeder before I packed up with the light fading fast.

My first time on this beat, indeed my first time back on the Wye for a couple of seasons. What a wonderful place to fish. Peaceful, secluded and in beautiful surroundings, a total and welcome contrast to my usual urban existence. It’s not a place for the unfit though, the admittedly fairly short walk back up the path to the car at the end of the day with my tackle had me wondering how long my corpse might lie undiscovered!
I fished the first field, on a low and clear river and had four barbel to 8lb, and lost a fifth to a hook pull after playing it almost to the net. All of the fish were pristine, long, lean bars of gold, pretty as a picture in the sunshine and fell to very whittled down boilies, straight lead and PVA bags of mixed pellet.
I have to mention the swans, which were sometimes a nuisance in spite of my best efforts to move away from them - there were more swans on this beat than I’ve ever seen anywhere outside of a sanctuary. I gave up trying to count them when I got to 40. I did consider a move to the faster, shallower water at the top end, but my inherent laziness won out in the end.
All in all, a very enjoyable day on a splendid venue.

Nice stretch. Difficult banks but worth it.
