A low and clear Wye meant things may be tricky. It was my first visit here so I walked the stretch top to bottom before starting and given the levels the riffles at the top and bottom of the beat were too shallow to be any good. The area near the middle car park was almost at a standstill. The beach above the car park could be accessed with waders to fish the gulley/cover far side but anglers on the other bank meant this was no-go so I settled on the lower half of the main field (upper half is very shallow). I baited a few swims and fished in rotation. A barbel was taken about 10.30am (about 6lb). However as the cloud broke up and the sun came out it was clear barbel time was over so I contented myself to trot meat in several swims getting a bite a chuck off chub between 8oz and a pound and a perch about 12oz (yes, on meat!). There are hoards of small chub and dace here.

At 7pm I went back to the barbel fishing, having kept the bait trickling into several swims all day. I reaped the rewards as at dusk, in the same swim as produced earlier, the rod ripped off within minutes of casting out (barbel about 5lb). With that one resting in the net I recast and the rod ripped off again almost immediately, this one about 9lb. That was curfew time so I walked back to the car very happy.

An awesome day on a beautiful, peaceful stretch of the Wye. Big thumbs up to the W&U and the landowner.

Make no mistake it is not an easy stretch nor is it prolific. You will not land on scores of barbel and sit there catching them. You have to work for bites and to avoid the smaller fish but the rewards are there. Be prepared to do a lot of walking and you'll love it.

Rained all morning which dampened spirits, recent cold weather put the fish off. Chub came to feeder and pellet on lower section

I picked a real “Phew what a scorcher” day to fish and was rewarded with a seemingly non-stop flow of boat traffic, with a good number of badly burnt oarsmen and women….ouch! This and the very low level of the river added up to a lot of chub between 8oz to 1lb plus a barbel around 6lb. Fished pellet on the hook and in the feeder, and moved around a lot as there were very few anglers on the beat.

Many thanks to the landowner and The Wye & Usk Foundation for a enjoyable day’s fishing. A stunning spot and will definitely return in the Autumn to more water and less boats!

Moving bait (corn) for was more effective than stationary.
