1 small, very obliging, perfectly conditioned chub saved a blank. Scorching hot, traditionally slow start to the season, hoping for more productive days to come. Lovely to be back on the Wye.

First day of the season and arrived to find plenty of swims available. River looked okay after the previous weekends heavy rain had washed through, nice height and colour. Weather very hot though and quite slow fishing throughout the day. Changed swims and caught 3 x chubb but no sign of the barbel.

Tough day on a rising river which was already running quickly. We tried every likely spot whilst walking the whole beat. However, it was a pleasant day and the wildlife amazing!

On arrival, the sun on the clear water allowed me to watch 2 pairs of barbel wallowing in the gravel, clearly very attracted to each other.
Nothing in my bait bag prompted any reaction, they were far more interested in each other than in feeding.
Fascinating to watch them. Kept me entertained for over an hour but overall, a day with no sign of action on the rod tip. An inquisitive pike of 12-15lb paid me a visit as I was leaving, again great to see.
Despite the landing net staying dry it was a restorative day on the river, good to be back after an absence of over a year. Mallards, mergansers, pheasants and wood pigeons kept me company through the day.

Very challenging fishing, river high and rising in the pouring rain, lots of debris in the chocolate coloured water. Persevered for Barbel in the slack water under the banks, but only had two bites between us on pellet/meat/boiler which produced two chub. My mate had some nice Dace and Roach on a maggot feeder though

2 Chub, 10 Other
