No luck. Only had the chance to fish for a couple of hours, not ideal when it's your first time on a beat. I could of saved some time by not setting up the fly rod.

Nothing caught or seen, fish have moved up river on the high water I think. But a very enjoyable day none the less.

Arrived early to find clouds of mist rising off the water following the overnight frost. The water was clearing nicely after the recent flush of rain and prospects appeared reasonable. Fished hard covering most of the beat without success and no fish were showing. By the time the canoeists arrived in numbers it felt like I was flogging the water and so decided to call it a day. Interestingly I did see a large shoal of small silvery fish below the boat pool which I belive were smolts although I'm not 100% certain.

At 8pm caught a fresh 12lb hen salmon at top end of Boat Pool. Saw several fish humping on the surface which I presume were running fish. At 8.30 as dusk was falling caught a 3-4lb Sea Trout below Boat Pool, top end of Willow Run. Both fish on small black and silver Flying C. Water dropped back to 4 inches on Lydbrook gauge but still with colour.

Blank. Just one of those days when the river appeared to be lifeless with nothing showing at all. Next time...

Early morning start and by midday with nothing showing was beginning to think it was going to be another normal fishless day. Then - just as my mate popped down on a quick visit a fish takes (red flying c). Had to hang on and let it take line for a while. Eventually the fish tires and then we realised that it would not fit into my 24 inch Gye net. My mate jumped in and managed to lift the fish out. 40 inches of mighty Wye springer with a real deep body. Later in the day (7.30pm) another take and another big fish is on. It was certainly a similar size to the first (if not bigger). Could not beleive it when after about 10 minutes the hook pulls out - talk about being gutted. Thanks to AT who was also fishing the beat for standing by with the net. Hope you connect with something similar on your next visit.
