Went down to the beat with confidence, beginning an evening fish just as the water levels were beginning to drop after the recent rain. May flies were hatching so I matched the colour with a dry yellow evening dun, size 14 and cast about the glides and got lucky. Plucked a nice one pounder out from under a tree and then got into a bigger one a few minutes later. I wasn't quite sure how to play a big river fish, as he was holding his ground and treading water, a rods length away from the net. My inexperience with larger fish shone through as I attempted to land him and he came off. One or two swear words later I recast and caught another (potentially the same) fish and brought him, with caution to my waiting net. He must have been 1.5lb, which for me, is a river record. Went home chuffed. Cracking beat.

Fished for an hour or so at 7.30am without success with nymph patterns. Tried again for a similar period in early afternoon without any offers to nymph or dry fly. The conditions , with a cold upstream wind, made fishing difficult. There was quite a lot of fly life pm but I only saw 1 fish rise and then only the once. Lovely beat but I chose the wrong day.

I only had an hour. The parking slot at the hut was taken and I could not find the pedestrian access beyond the caravan site. Below the bridge was being fished. No fish caught. One rise to a tan Klinkhammer

Lovely day fly fishing, plenty rising but none took the hook! Will definitely be back! Without waders the water was rather cold!

Perfect start to the day with a chunky trout at the top of the beat on nymph. With a hatch of grannom and enough rising fish, interest was quickly switched to dry fly selection. Tried everything in my toolbox; size, colour, presentation, stealth, outrageous, conservative. All wrong! Went back to nymphing but with not a single bump or nibble for two hours decided to head home. Good pint of Butty Bach in the pub. Will be back in May for another attempt.
