With the river starting to rise yesterday (it was up about 3 feet from its level of last week), I had high hopes for today, although certainly never expected to catch that number of barbel. I intended to start at the lower end of the beat and picked an area I'd not fished before. Got a barbel first cast, and then regularly throughout the day, so extremely lucky to just drop on them from the off. Fish ranged from 4lb 8ozs to 9lb 6ozs. All caught on pellet/PVA bag method. Looking forward to a second day on this beat tomorrow.

River had about a foot of extra water on when I arrived but started to fall after about 2 hours and the chub started feeding. 6 cracking chub all caught on meat down the edge using a centre pin touch ledgering. Also a bonus barbel late on. A great day, felt more like summer in the afternoon when the sun came out.

First time on this beat, and only second time on the Wye. Fished the wrong area (fast, shallow water) for most of the day but still managed a nice barbel of 8lb 5oz which held in the strong current for at least 10 minutes despite using a powerful barbel rod.
I had an eel at dusk which considering their declining population was not unwelcome.
Lovely day out saw kingfishers, buzzards, wagtails and woodpeckers all in very peaceful location. Some swims tricky to get to but this is the Wye not a commercial.

The river had risen significantly overnight and was racing through. Locating fish proved to be difficult. I fished a number of swims using feeder tactics with various hook baits with no success. Tried a rolling bait but just found snags. Switched to trotting down the inside edge below the bottom croy and finally found some fish. Only small chub and dace but non the less most welcome. My brother stuck it out in the bottom swim for the afternoon and was rewarded as darkness fell with a Barbel just over 5lb. Thank you to the WUF for another lovely day on the Wye.

Conditions seemed fine, there was a rising river and it was reasonably warm. However, I managed to blank which I confess is not at all rare. I chose to concentrate solely on barbel as I felt sure they would feed, but my offer of swimfed fishy flavoured boilies, and pelllets managed to attract zero interest in the five hours I fished. My friend on the other side of the river, as ever, managed to catch a few by varying his tactics. I gather the chub was quite nice as were the two grayling he took on the float. His barbel was only a small one I gather, around the pound mark. Lots of beautiful views rainbows, kingfishers, kestrels hunting, buzzards soaring etc. I had a nice time, but it would have been better if I'd managed to fluke a fish or two....
