Arrived at first light for a three hour session, the river was dropping and coloured with a bit of pace. Managed three fish in the first hour and not a knock after the largest of the two Barbel weighing in at 9lb 3oz decided to hold bottom and took some budgeing anyway its good to be up and running for a new river season. Upper hill court is a very underated venue hoping to do some trotting on the lower stretch this year.

1 8lb Common carp, but before I could start fishing i had to cut the weeds and long grass down to even get a peg that was relatively fishable, I'm a pensioner and I ended up finishing early as I pulled my back out

Really odd. River looked perfect. A decent lift in the water level, plenty of colour but only about 1m of height. 4 of us fished hard in all the known pegs for a total of 1 bite on opening day. And that was an eel…

We suspect that something must have washed in to the river to knock the fish so off the feed. We didn’t even get the usual tip rattles from chublets.

This is my absolute favourite beat on the wye but on this occasion I was very disappointed, absolutely no maintenance has been done no swims cut out, with all the rain at the weekend the river was high fast and chocolate brown not ideal conditions areas that would normally be accessible weren’t which left us only two swims to fish. But we still managed a few fish, back again in a couple of weeks hopefully with better conditions.

The River looked fantastic - unusual for opening day. 3 Barbel to about 7lb. As the afternoon progressed the river calmed down, and although it retained its colour the eddies and creases that were there at 08:00 disappeared. The fish seemed to stop feeding and that was it for the day.
Quick note - the far car park is currently inaccessible due to a build up of flood debris behind the gate.

Great to be back on our favourite river for the opening day. Nice to have a long chat with Colin. River had good colour and dropped like a stone during the day.

Arrived to river pushing through with half a meter on it slowly dropping off. Dropped a foot during session. Early session before shooting into town for breakfast. So 2nd cast at sunrise rolling meat big powerful thump then screamed of to middle. Eventually landed it a very strong healthy 9lb 2oz Barbel. 3 eels then joined the party. Weather gave 2nd hottest day of the year. No further action until evening 18. 00hrs thump on feeder krill dumbells on hair. 8lb Barbel, it looked quiet ruff possibly just spawned covered in lots of jelly lookin lice. Then another eel. Evening bites were looking good but had to pack up early as needed to check in at the Inn on the Wye. These digs are so central to lower Wye beats. So only 2 off Barbel.
But hey that's still a good day out in remarkable settings on a glorious day. 9lb 2oz backed up with a 8lb. I could fish 5 or 10 seasons down south and still not catch that in a day. Only 7 canoes came through.

Good days fishing in very hot conditions, 2 barbel came in morning & surprisingly 2 in the mid afternoon heat all caught on meat or pellet, some nice sized chub came via meat & also a couple of eels,

The amount of fishable pegs on the stretch are minimal & the two nearest the water works are the only easily fishable ones, others are steep & trees/bushes could do with trimming back, I wouldn't attempt to fish many of the pegs in wet conditions as they would be pretty dangerous, this is a nice venue but could be a lot better with some work.
