A very enjoyable day out. The river was at normal levels and quite clear and the weather was generally kind to us although we did have a downpour late in the piece. This beat is excellent with lots of varied water and very good access, the major problem is that you are spoilt for choice on where to fish. We had around a dozen barbel with the best going mid 7's. All were taken on pellet or small cubes of meat. We also had the pleasure of sharing the beat with a thoroughly nice guy from Essex and I'm pleased to say that he had some success too. In 40 years of angling I can honestly say that, with very few exceptions, every angler I've ever met has been friendly and helpful and I think that says it all about angling and anglers in general!

Great to see a lot of clearance work has been carried out on the beat since I last came in October. Loads of swims to choose from now. Tried piking in morning but no luck. Then had a go for chub and roach but again drew a blank. Finally got the luncheon meat out and caught 3 hard fighting barbel, the best of which weighed 9 pounds.

Got to the fishery early as this was our first time on this section. Water was low and clear and the top section was hard to judge as all the water was on the far side. We started just the over the other side of stile/fence after information given by one of land owners staff. He was spot on as we got into the fish at about 11.30. Chub and barbel fell to hemp and maggots then pellet. Best barbel 7.4lbs and best chub 4.5lbs. 12 chub in total 6 barbel all fish in superb condition. Fantastic section yet again but did not even get to see bottom section. Can not wait for season to start again. This was the first time booked on line but I do prefer to talk to beat office.

Another fab day on the Wye. Caught 6 barbel and dozens of Chub. River quite low and clear so maggot the best bait.

Second visit, last time it was -5 (Nov 29th). When I arrived this time -6! Started in the Island Pool, no fish but did see an Otter. Next fished Carey Brook, caught two chub (about 3lb) on meat. Then fished Quarry Pool, very snaggy, lost equipment, no fish. Finally fished Lower Bridge Pool, caught 1 barbel (5lb 8oz) on 14mm pellet.

Very cold easterly wind. River in good winter condition, if a little too clear. 2 chub and 1 barbel caught on pellet and feeder approach (not to my rod though!). Looking forward to the new season.

Chilly but otherwise pleasant day. In the car on the way up the A40 we agreed that the cold weather of the last few days and water temperature around 6 degrees would find the fish out of the main flow. So we spent more than half the day trying every crease and area of slacker, deeper water without so much as a twitch despite ringing the changes with maggot, corn, meat and pellets on float and feeder.
Then 'top bloke' Colin the bailiff turned up. "you don't wanna do that, you wanna fish out in the main flow, in the shallower areas where the river's wide". He suggested a couple of spots and we'd both had 6lb+ barbel literally within 5 minutes and chub to follow later. You learn something every day. Brilliant day, great fishing. Thanks WUF.
