On a sunny day Caradoc can be a very busy venue judging by previous reports and even on a cloudy one there were people swimming in the river.....The fishing however can be rewarding in a beautiful place and fortunately for me this was the case on this visit.
Only one rod fished and I caught 6 Barbel with the best fish being just under 9lb.I lost one and bumped a couple more off in a productive day which also produced a few 8oz small Chub too. Rather curiously though I caught nothing on the float trotting pellet despite giving this method some considerable effort and time....There were also some fairly friendly cattle which at one stage broke out in a bit of a gallop which was certainly a bit of an eye opener. With the opposite bank controlled by BAA and a syndicate there is plenty of angling pressure here too so you need a few things going for you to enjoy this beat.

This is a beat which has consistently been good to us in recent years. River conditions looked ok, after carrying a tinge of colour the previous day the river had become clearer overnight and had dropped a fraction.
We settled on pegs in the woods where the river was at its quickest in the hope that this may offer the best chance of Barbel. This plan though did not really work out. There were Chub to be caught all day long but even they came in fits and starts rather than steadily. Barbel were almost completely absent from the picture though, only one small one was caught all day long.
Had a little rove around and tried other pegs but this only produced more Chub.
Slightly disappointing that we failed to catch Barbel in anything like the numbers of recent years but that’s fishing for you.
A lovely quiet stretch to fish though even if the walk up the hill does get the blood pumping a bit.

First time on this beat and as usual, I started by walking the stretch. Sadly the river had coloured overnight, so this wasn’t very helpful, but good to see the lie of the land.

Fished a few of the top swims to start with and managed to hook a very strong fish that just held very deep for a long time. Was expecting a monster, but it turned out to be a barbel of about 4lbs hooked in the tail. Managed an old looking chub of about 3lbs, then moved to the cattle drink swims in the meadow below the car park to try some trotting . There were lots of anglers on the opposite bank, so I only really had one swim on offer, but managed a small chub. I moved back to the woods for the evening and managed a large eel 2.5lbs+ and then a beautiful 9lb barbel. All fish caught on pellets/corn/meat.
A great day and I look forward to returning.
