My apologies for not filling in catch details sooner, but the cottage in which we were staying had only very sporadic internet access. I landed two salmon parr and six trout, mostly small, hooking four and losing four bigger ones. They were all caught on a flashback hares ear or an Adams. The most notable feature of the day was a cow paddling down the river towards me.

Six weeks ago I was catching much bigger fish but only 5 over 10", and the rest down towards 6" - all caught on S16 Adams Para. I reflected on how much this beat has changed over the years I have fished it. This year the beat has benefitted from some clearing of bank side trees and some fallen trunks, and it will remain a favourite.

Edw Hergest is a delightful beat we keep going back to and always gives us slightly less gifted dry fly anglers the chance of some sport . It was a shame to see it with only a small trickle of water in places where we had caught fish back in May. In the deeper runs we were able raise a number of brownies and after a few missed splashy takes, managed to land a wbt of around 7 inches on a grey duster para.

Fishing up to the cattle crossing, another 2 wbts around the same size came to the duster para and to para Adams. A very pleasant morning with the prospect of the afternoon on the Edw Cregrina beat.

All fish admired and returned safely

The only downside was the new waders bought for the trip leaking like an onion bag

River very low and crystal clear. Lost a good fish, approximately 1/2lb, on about 4th cast which rose to a klinkhammer. The remaining fish were 7 inches maximumand all to a tungsten headed nymph and caught in deeper water.

After fishing (more like swimming) the Craig-Llyn beat in the morning I was pretty battered and nearly didn’t fish but I had a new 9.5ft 1weight I wanted to try out (which was perfect) so made the effort. This was my second time to this fantastic wild stream the first being at the beginning of the season where I’d grafted hard for 5 fish. Today I’d had 6 within 10 minutes, what a contrast.
There was hardly any fly coming off the water apart from a brief hatch when the sun came out but fishing the duo takes were about 50/50 for dry and dropper fished off the end of a French style leader. size 14 deer hair emerger and 16/18 hare’s ear nymph. There was a wide range of sizes and plenty of fry.
I’m sorry I didn’t count the catch.

Second day on the Edw. Stayed at the Hundred House Pub last night. Nice pint of Butty, a simple steak, a comfy bed and busy with holiday makers come in from the rain. The continued rain during the day on Sunday raised and coloured the river by afternoon. Another good day of sport, and today I got some bigger fish on with at least 5 at 12" and fat.
The Hergest beat seems to have had some clearing done in recent months (WUF?) and a lot of bank side growth has been pushed back. This beat is a favourite of mine and it felt quite different with some pools changing character quite a lot (for the better generally I guess).

Well, the Edw certainly delivered again!! Brought 26 trout to hand, about half being little ones from the fast shallow runs, the rest a good average up to 11". All on a size 18 para adams, and all fit and healthy. Got the first from a shallow run as I was just starting, and so carried on trying to hook the little ones from the fast runs as well as exploring the deeper runs and pools. All great fun, and did not even fish the full beat.

An very hot, bright sunny day with lowish water levels I should judge (though this was my first time on this beat). Occasional signs of Mayfly and other hatching flies and sporadic rises by small fish. I took three small brownies on a Parachute Adams (and lost three more) and then made the mistake of changing to a Humpy and a Pheasant Tail nymph with the unintended result of hooking myself securely in my left hand, a misuse of a nymph if ever there was one. I can warmly recommend the staff of the A&E Department at Nevill Hall Hospital!
