Much more than great to get back here, a favourite stream of mine. Fished the upper part of this beat mostly right to top boundary as there's so many good runs, literally one after the other. The usual battle actually getting in to the river (been a good growing year it seems) but once in then its pretty much wadeable all the way up and a fab place to be on a bright hot day. Lots of shade in the river! The usual keeping low and going along very slow, it really can pay here.

Fairly quiet on top though today , just a few mayfly and odds n sods coming off and fish not really reacting that much to the speculative casts which was unusual and the fish seemed to be much more interested in a chunky black foam beetle than any mayfly pattern today. Water looked really great, good level, clear and cool and the bed very clean indeed and the usual thousands upon thousands of the micro caddis homes on the stones.

So , it was just the two this afternoon, quite good fish though for here at 10" & 12" and in really superb condition and really strong too. Happy with that! Emerged out of the river in the evening and the meadows where full of various olive spinner doing their thing backlit by the sinking sun. Had to leave though for the long journey back home.
All just fabulous and can't wait to get back.

There's quite a few less obstructions in/over the river up there now btw as I pulled them out whilst working up.

Quite a warm afternoon so was hoping for some mayfly action. Flies hatching and fish rising when I arrived at 2.30 so fished a mayfly klinkhammer. 5 nice sized trout to hand missed as many.

Fished from 9 until 2 to beat the heat although it was pretty cool in the stream with all the overhanging trees. A few mayfly spinners from the day before but none seen hatching. Mainly fished duo and all but 2 fish on the nymph.

Some nice runs but overall pretty overgrown,I was fishing a 6’6 rod and that was plenty.

I had 2 concerns about fishing this and the Llynfi Talgarth beats: 1, the recent Llynfi pollution spill but the WUF Office confirmed that the incident had only affected the Pontithel beat, and 2, recent reports that the river was choked with trees and guarded by impenetrable barbed wire. I found fish, and found few more downed trees or little more barbed wire than is common on many of the Wild Stream beats I have fished. A good challenge.

Barbed wire and extremely dense plant growth all along the beat make almost a fortress of it. This didn’t make me feel welcome. Having overcome these barriers, the exuberant vegetation limits casting highly (in summer only?).
This day the water was far from clear. Two rises seen, followed by two brown trout of 7 inches each on cdc march brown and cdc loop wing caddis. Nymphing without any result.

had a good ramble today , plenty of fly on the water, mayfly , olives, midge , stonefly and several rising trout and grayling as I arrived during a steady hatch of mayfly. half a dozen fell for cdc mayfly the rest to nymph as the hatch had ended within half hour and the rises ceased. I lost several other trout to hook pulls also. this beat is quite overgrown now and glad I fished it early , within a couple more weeks will be very dense with foliage . size between7-12 inches with the majority 9 inches.

Very good to be back out on the rather lovely Lynfi and looking just great in the spring sunshine. No mayfly yet that I saw but where a few olives and stoneflies popping off here and there and enough to keep the fish looking up and the old tried and trusted para' Adams in a 16 did the job very well as usual.
The fish where all in fabulous condition, plump and all punched more than well above their size. It seemed to me the average fish size was up this season, apart from a couple of 6 inchers the rest where up around the 9 to 11inch mark . Could be some very interesting fishing late summer , hope so!
Lots of the other smaller fish bumped off and a good few of the larger chaps still too.
Good numbers of fry observed. Hopefully trout.
I find by experience that its the top approx 1/3 of the beat to the boundary that fishes the best and a fantastic stretch to fish . Once your in the water up by Tregunter farm you can wade up all the way to the boundary in low/lowish water and its riffle, run, pool sequence all the way and more than a good few hours worth at least doing the heron walk.
Looking forward to when the mayflies up . That will be even more fun.!
Many thanks again WUF.
