Fishing:Trout (River)

Arrived to find the river carrying a tinge of colour and a bit of extra water-Perfect conditions.
Fished a French type leader with a single nymph, swopped between a copper and silver bead pheasant tail pattern.
Fished from the bottom of the beat upstream to the top of the beat, exploring all the little pockets and the deeper pools. Caught 30 plus trout mostly 6" to 7" with a few 10" to 12" and one 14"
Most fun I ever had stood up!
A note ref the booking system - I was more than disappointed when the vouchers were withdrawn and the new wild stream online booking was introduced perhaps because I didn't understand how it worked but now I have sampled it I have to admit that the new system is far superior and I like the fact I can now book and secure the fishing I want when I want-perfect.

First time fishing the Arrow, fished from Mallhollam Bridge to the upper limit, then after an early lunch drove downstream to Hergest Bridge and fished up to 4.30pm. There was plenty of fly life but no rising fish, little early in the season I'd say. River was running nice and clear with a good flow, 11wbt in total to 8" all caught fishing duo/New Zealand style. Nymphs used were copper beaded ptn's (Mary copperheads & red/ginger hackled copperheads) 2mm size 16. Pocket water against tree roots produced the most fish. Access to river is easy and the allocated parking is easily found.

The river was very low. Very difficult to fish because the fish were easily spooked.

Fairly low water, 5 salmon parr 3"-5"(nice to see), 8 wbt 7" - 9", lovely day except for a ducking! This despite using a staff, I would say a staff is a must on this beat - very rocky bottom. Klink and dink, one on the klink the rest on PTN and GRHE size 16.
All the fish came from the Kington half of the beat. The Mallhollam Bridge part is almost unfishable due to the Alders almost touching the water in places. Managed to get four casts in half a mile! Also saw my first brook lamprey in forty years, unfortunately it was dead!

It was a very hard day, windy, rainy and also with hail in the middle of the river. At least one brown trout 6".
lovely spot and lovely beat. I started fishing with 13ºC and I finished over 7ºC (very cold indeed). Catch and release of course and I caught it with a dry fly
(one March Brown).

No fish caught, raised or seen. No hatch - only 2 flies seen all day. Perhaps, due to the recent snow and continuing easterlies, river conditions are more like mid March than mid April.
Please note that the directions for the lower beat could be improved because the hedge alongside the bridge is impassable, I suggest you insert between ...water treatment works and access the river "cross the bridge and walk 250 yards down the road to enter the field by the gate, then walk back on the other side of the hedge" to access the river etc.
