Beat:Arrow Kington

Was nice to give the Kington beat a bash today , water looked at a lovely height when I tackled up at ten , initially rigged up with a size eighteen tungsten flashback ptn. No obvious rises at the start of the beat , and the first pool after creeping under the bridge produced nothing , which is unusual , as I've had a brownie out of there on the last few visits . . . . .

The first brownie only stayed on for a while , felt like a decent fish , the next did stay , quickly admired then released . The colours of the Arrow trout are always a delight !!!!

Around elevenish some splashy rises started to show , no obvious fly life that I could see they were after , and only a few mayflies showing sporadically , so opted for an eighteen parachute Adams , seemed to do the trick , and had some great fun , only small fish at the heads of pools hitting the dry fly !!!

One decent brownie of about ten inches , but the others were all between six and eight inches , cracking condition , and tubby after feeding well probably on a mix of upwings and caddies. The bed of the river is alive with caddis , and insect life is varied around the river , saw stone flies , few mays and a variety of other upwings . . . . .

Was a nice four hours sport , five Caught and released and several long and short range releases !!!!, Shall give one of the other Arrow beats a crack in a few days , great fun as always . . . . . . . .

After seeing the previous report and being desperate to catch anything I decided to take the day off and go to Kington.
The day was mostly overcast with the occasional breeze. All of the fish came on nymphs, either GRHE or PTN's, with fast water being the most productive. The size of the fish varied from 4 - 10 inches.
The beat itself is varied with plenty of riffles and pools to have a go at, casting can be challenging due to the amount of trees.
Overall a good day out, and so nice to finally catch a fish after two blanks this year!

Decided after a hectic weeks work , to tackle the Arrow for a change from Pinsley and Stretford brooks. Was about one when i turned up , about 12 degrees and intermittent sun , water looked fabulous , running clear , and at a lovely depth !!!

Tackled up with my trustee six foot two weight , my own size eighteen black nymph , and my beaded GRHE. Meandered under the bridge , and first cast , a feisty little Arrow brownie took my black magic nymph . . . . . Excellent , things looked promising .

Slowly moving upstream prospecting my nymphs , had another two in quick succession , mainly from the heads of the small pools . The fish varied in size , from five inches up to twelve . Two of the brownies gave me a right run around on the two weight rod , but great fun !!!!!!

Didn't fish the whole beat , and only managed to fish perhaps seven hundred yards , but managed nine superbly marked Arrow brownies, those red spots are staggering !!!!!!

Insect life under and around the stones on the river bed was vast , ranging from stone clinkers to a huge number of caddis . No rises were seen at all during my three hour session , and although there were a smattering of olives seen here and there , it didn't tempt the resident fish to look up !!!!

Called it a day at just gone four , had a real fun three hours , life's good in the Arrow Valley , shall head over to Whittern beat in a few days , give that a bash .

With nine really striking brownies caught and released , I was a happy man , chilled out for a bit near the bridge , a quick drink from the flask , and headed off to the Ponderosa . . . . . . . . Back very soon !

A first time reccie out for us on this beat and definitely one to visit more !
The water was pushing through a fair bit , which came as no surprise , but running clear and if nothing else it was just good to go and stand in a river at last . Been a long winter and lousy start to spring for sure . A cold downstream wind today
The river up here has a surprising number of fairly deep pots and good runs and is very sinous and looks as though it could be fabulous below the weir when it's all calmed down and greened up . Mind you you can see it will be a bit of jungle when it does but thats the wild streams for you of course . All great fun .
We saw some elvers just above the weir.
The riverbed was littered with cased Caddis which bodes well and we had 5 fish between the two of us, 8 to 11 inch and a touch lean perhaps but in good nick otherwise and very pleased with that all things considered . Beautiful Arrow fish as always . A small bedhead pheasant tail and Holy Grail accounted for the fish , nothing rising today or any reason to suggest they would . Next time ....and looking forward much to that !
By the way we got on to the river by dropping down in to the river at the lower car park and did the short funny walk under the bridge.

Managed about three hours before the (much needed) rain really set in to make life miserable. Three trout to 9" all to a size 16 tungsten Pheasant Tail Nymph.

I fished this beat as part of the truly excellent Wild Streams Open Day. As this was my first time on this beat, it is a little hard to say much that is accurate about river condition beyond that it was low and clear, and the fishing tight and technical. I fished predominantly dries, prospecting occasionally with a nymph in some deeper sections. Both small trout were rising fish, taken on a dry fly and released.
