Really interesting bit of water. I think i got a bit confused and actually went further up the Monnow than i should have.... The entry up the Olchon is fenced and looks liek one shouldn't go up it!

Managed 4 WBT between 10 - 12". 2 on para adams, 2 on comparadun thing-y. Hooked at least 5 more that all got off. Quite a lot of action in most pools though struggled to really find what they were feeding on. Also they were easily spooky.

Fished the Olchon from the junction with the Monnow up to first road bridge. The access is appalling, with 3 high rows of barbed wire blocking the river in several places. A cattle gate stops progress just above the bridge... so I gave up and went to a club water stretch of the Monnow. I did catch 1 nice fish of 1lb 4oz in the junction pool on the Monnow (included in the beat) a nymph fished on a French leader.

Fished for about 4hrs from 3pm on a really warm, sunny day. Only fished the second leg of the beat, from the second road crossing up to the camp site. River level was ideal and water looked v. healthy and clear. Plenty of fly life inc. mayflies kicking about, although the fish didnt seem particularly interested in rising for much. Fishing was a little slow, especially for such promising water. All the fish caught seemed pretty well fed so Im assuming they've been gorging these last few days. Fished a duo all day, with a pretty even split between fish to the dry and nymph.

Did not fish. The stream was in spate and the colour of hot chocolate.

The barbed wire entanglements make the stream above the road bridge inaccessible as they are no doubt intended to do.
For the rest it is fairly over-grown and currently with very low flow. This means that fish are are extremely difficult , or in my case impossible, to approach for a successful cast. A few rising fish but the rest are speculative casts with only a few pools open enough. The weather though forecast as overcast with some rain was bright, warm & sunny. For all the gripes above, it is still a lovely stream.

A final wild stream trip for the time being - a few days staying up near Longtown coming to an end. Again a small and relatively untended stream, but plenty of fish were in little runs and pools. I only really covered the bottom half of the beat and found 8 willing to take either nymph or klink. Lost a few too. Best was from a very deep pool - just as I was lifting to cast a beautiful 14" fish took the nymph. Which kept me very happy, in spite of the fact that having released it, it was impossible to wade the pool and there was a vicious barbed wire fence on the RHB were I was supposed to be. Not sure how I was meant to progress from there - walked the length of the field but no crossing point. In the end I climbed it, and seemed to survive (as did waders) but far from ideal. LHB not viable either, although fishing was single bank only at that point. Enough complaining - a lovely stretch, fish 6-14". And a minnow.

Wuf comment: barbed wire noted for treatment, many thanks for letting us know
